Foley, a Bush family friend since the early 1980s

* this from the Miami Herald, 2005, is something i haven't seen reported of late:
"Hours before the House vote, President Bush called Foley, a Bush family friend since the early 1980s, and asked for his support."
* update: here's Bush, Oct 04:
"I want to thank my friend, Congressman Mark Foley, for joining us today."
FTR, this isn't boilerplate language, he's only used the phrase "I want to thank my friend, Congressman" seven times according to whitehouse.gov. (and 4 times with "Senator")

* and here's Laura Bush, Oct 04 (different event, different day): "
Congressman Mark Foley, thank you very, very much. Thank you for being here with me, and thank you for your service to your constituents and for your friendship. (Applause.)"

* updating again. Palm Beach Post :

(Jeb) Bush and Foley have exchanged about 100 electronic messages since 1999, according to documents Bush's office released Wednesday evening....

The e-mails show a friendly relationship between Foley and Bush, in contrast to Bush's recent characterization of Foley's behavior as "despicable" and "disgusting."

Luke is the best, Jenny. His nose for news is truly world class. You might even say the man is a news animal. I say it, and often. Regrettably, most people aren't big readers, and don't understand what I'm telling them.

yay, Jen, finally made it over here. :-)

lukery, let me amend that. i love your blog. i want to wash it's feet with my hair.

i am way behind on Luke's brilliance, Uri, (can I call you Uri? I don't know the technology to spell your name correctly) but in reading more, I see you do not lie. I'm sorry to hear that about most people. i'm a very big reader, and i mean that literally.

rimone, thx for the welcome and the introduction. eternally in your debt, as you know.

Yes, you may call me Uri and please do. I'm familiar with you, though not intimately, as I see your URL cruising the blogs. This is a character map-generated name I made long ago to bypass the profanity filter in MSN chat which, incidentally, is scheduled for elimination October 16. I'm still working on my comments about the Military Commissions Act. I'm going to have to download U.S. Code, damn it all, and study that a little. I'm almost done with the research, which falls dreadfully short of what many writers have done. In reading other authors' comments, I disagree with many as to what is significant about the Act. So, hopefully it won't be too much longer before I'm ready to write. I will be extremely unkind in my criticism of Congress and our presinitwit. Get ready. Things are busy here and I can't guess as to when it will appear; I thought I'd be done by now. It's a smoke-and-mirrors document which, apparently, many lawmakers who voted for it did not read. I know raising campaign funds and tending one's extensive investment portfolio can be time-consuming, but out here in Bumfuck, Nowhere, we were really hoping they'd read at least some of the damn laws they're asked to approve or deny. Oh well, life has its little disappointments, I guess, and you can't get too depressed about wholesale dereliction of duty by the country's most powerful individuals.

uranus - thanks for the flattering words. that sort of thing will take you places.

Jenny - you too with the fawning. that'll certainly earn you a place on the GSF map.

Although I've found hero worship repulsive, as journalism is (was) my chosen field I naturally admire someone who takes a genuine, demonstrated interest in current events, in a world where (as I said) so few people read the news. Naturally, this makes you a privileged character indeed and yes, it should take me places. Heaven knows clean living, hard work and devotion sure didn't! But that's another long, arduous story which I might tell someday when we're all really old, on a bevy of drugs and anything seems funny.

Got here from Americablog.com, Lukery. I'll echo what others have said: Nice catch.

You downloaded the pages as a web archive, right? Because Foley suddenly vanished from hundreds of politicians' websites once this scandal broke, and I'm sure that the NSA will inform Chimpy about these links that were somehow overlooked and they'll disappear as well. ; )
