mr ed - ok so the following looks weird... a search in google news for 'bush carlyle' gives the following (i was checking to see how gwb1's separation from carlyle was reported (badly of course - basically just the ft):

"MONDAY MORNING
Washington Post, DC - 5 Oct 2003
... Kenneth W. Starr and his wife, Alice; and former secretary of defense and Carlyle ... about
an hour from Austin or San Antonio and 150 miles from President Bush's ..."
with 'monday morning' being linked to http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A49443-2003Oct5.html

but that link leads to: http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?pagename=article&node=&contentId=A49443-2003Oct5¬Found=true
it looks like the code has looked for "A49443-2003Oct5" and not found it and then flipped it over to the the next date which happens to be oct 6, and is in fact a monday. (the google response was titled Monday Morning' - but dated the 5th, which is a sunday. - altho perhaps the column is simply called 'monday morning', maybe the story was dated the previous day when it was written/filed??)

"MONDAY MORNING
Monday, October 6, 2003; Page E01
Texas Hill Country Attracts Heavy-Hitters from D.C. Area"

its also interesting to note that the date format from the two submissions are different...

ok - so thats only moderately curious - so then i put the term 'Kenneth W. Starr and his wife, Alice; and former secretary of defense and Carlyle ' into wapo's own search engine (powered by google) and get
"MONDAY MORNING (washingtonpost.com)
... grabbing pasts: former US solicitor general and Texas native Kenneth W. Starr and
his wife, Alice; and former secretary of defense and Carlyle Group chairman ...
www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A49443-2003Oct5.html"

the link is the same as the original google link - perhaps not surprisingly - and also gets rolled over but i do get a bit more text - what is under this rock?????????

ill try to piece it together by incrermentally searching by the text in the google results:

"Joining developer Gerald T. "Jerry" Halpin, 80, and his son, Mike, 40, in improving the 2,038-acre property near Johnson City are other big Washington hitters with headline-grabbing pasts: former US solicitor general and Texas native Kenneth W. Starr and his wife, Alice; and former secretary of defense and Carlyle Group chairman emeritus Frank C. Carlucci and his wife, Marcia."

interestingly when i search for " "wife, Marcia" washingtonpost" at google i get the rite hit - but in google news i draw a blank...

if i search google for "carlyle halpin carlucci" i get the same article at the top, but not one other accurate hit on the story

turbo10 didnt throw up any reference to the meeting.

vivisimo didnt throw up anything other than the same article.

"In the latest display of his naked right-wing partisanship, Kenneth W. Starr has decided to help raise funds for the Georgia wing-nut Congressman Bob Barr's primary campaign at a $250-a-plate fundraiser. "

The Strange Career of Frank Carlucci

While outside of government in the 1990's, Carlucci managed to circulate on the boards of various think-tanks, e.g. the RAND Corporation, and help promulgate reports on national security and defense that urged increases in defense spending and the use of US military might.

Until there is a massive movement to dismantle all of the institutions and ideas that sustain US imperialism and militarism, Frank Carlucci and his ilk will continue to profit and prosper at the expense of the well-being and very lives of people here and abroad.
