As late as 1948, thirty-eight states still forbade marriages of mixed-colors. Not until 1967, when the Supreme Court declared that the "freedom to marry" belonged to all Americans; that marriage is one of our "vital personal rights," and that the right to marry is "essential to the orderly pursuit of happiness by a free [people]," were inter-racial couples free to wed.
Investigators looked at postmarks, return addresses and the contents of the letters, the sources said. A lab in Maryland will now look for any traces of the lethal poison ricin on the letters, the sources said.
The Secret Service said Wednesday that it had waited six days after the Nov. 6 discovery of the letter, also containing ricin, before notifying the FBI and other agencies. The letter's discovery was not revealed to the public until Tuesday.
mred - im sure i read somewhere that the letter didnt have a postmark or return address?
But one of the ayatollah's guards, who identified himself only as Abu Mohammed, told AP by telephone from Najaf that ''there's no truth to this news'' of an assassination attempt, adding ''these are all lies. ''His eminence is in very good health and hasn't been subjected to any assassination attempts,'' he said. ''There haven't been any threats ... He hasn't been out and hasn't changed his place. There has been no gunfire.''
Perhaps sensing that Broadway Rudy is warming up in the bullpen, Cheney has begun upping his public profile. After rarely venturing out of his secure, undisclosed location?aka Republican fund-raisers?he has given a rash of high-profile interviews over the past month. And thank God for that: the Most Powerful Number Two In History just can't help telling it like he sees it, and the way he sees it is very, very telling. And frightening.
The tool for overturning Roe v. Wade at this point would be a change in the Supreme Court composition. The conventional wisdom is that the White House is going to discourage anybody from resigning from the Supreme Court until after the election, hoping they can win, and then, with a 5-4 majority, overturn it.
The irony here is that the Republican Party has continually campaigned against an activist Court. But what you find in Justices Scalia and Rehnquist, and Thomas in particular, is a high degree of activism when it?s a ideological issue that they?re concerned about.
It?s a truism to say democracy can't exist without feminism, because obviously democracy, if it means anything, means equal rights for all citizens. But feminism is part of it. The whole question of majority rule is threatened when so few people vote with so little knowledge of the issues that we get an unrepresentative, extremist government like we have now.
