Mr Blair was also fearful of an onslaught from the Sun, whose proprietor, Rupert Murdoch, reportedly told him he was prepared to "pull our vote" if Mr Blair resisted a referendum. It is understood that recent reports in the Sun about a U-turn were inspired by a phone call between the two, in which Mr Blair indicated he was considering the arguments in favour of a poll.
