mr ed

i dont know aaron brown, but ive read that he's a complete whore

anyways - he's doing a draft story, cutely titled 'draft on tap?'

as ive sed, this draft thing is heating way up - and it seems that the lies have started which is a pretty good reason to be worried.

heres the thing - the logic seems to be a) we need more troops b) its unfair to be racist/classist, therefore we need to draft everyone. students, whites, women etc. no exceptions.

that sounds like a reasonable, democratic, ideal - but there seems to be a sleightofhand. while a) mite be true, and b) mite be true, the conclusion is not valid.
the way im reading the reports is that they are preparing to draft everyone 18-26, as per the 'universal obligation' bill last year. as far as i can tell (?) 'draft' means to actually be chosen for service - not just to enter the lottery for the draft. (i dont know if there is a word for being put in the lottery).

their logic would be valid if they had said a) we need more troops b) its unfair to be racist/classist, therefore we need to put everyone in the draft lottery. students, whites, women etc. no exceptions.

but thats not what they are saying. they are saying we are stretched in iraq, lets draft *all* 18-26 year olds. quick math - 300m ams, avg lifespan 80 years, 26-18 = 9 years, 9 years/80 years = about 11% = *33 million drafted*. lemme repeat *33 million drafted* - based on the proposition that we are short on troops in iraq. thats not *33 million in the lottery* - its *33 million drafted*.

surely not, we say - surely the military doesnt need 30 million kids, we say. heres the rub, the kids are gonna be drafted for 'military and civillian' purposes. 'i think that kids wanna give something to their country' says hagel - well let them fukking vote with their feet you asshole.

and they position it as making it sure that the burden is shared equally - how buot they repeal the fukking tax cuts for the rich, and lure all these needed kids with a higher salaary? fukking hell.

hagel put the draft to the senate again yesterday

and now rangel is on hannity talking about the draft - saying 'of the 30m, only 500k would be military. the rest would have mandatory federal experience' - protecting the ports and whatnot.

these people are scarier than nearly anyone imagines. if u care about anyone in the age bracket, melbourne is a pretty nice town... i made exactly the same case a year(?) ago.

and let me make it clear - every time u see a story about the draft based on equity concerns, or troop concerns, its all a lie.

dont get me wrong, im not against the idea of a draft lottery (if required, somehow) which is fair, but its fukking scary that they extend that logic to therefore draft everyone.

hannity: 'its only 180(?) days till we re-elect bush'
hannity (about the anti-bush crowd): 'never hate your enemy, it clouds your judgement'
