Delhi damage control over 'nuke thief'

NEW DELHI - The arrest of a Dubai resident for allegedly trying to sell Indian atomic secrets to foreign powers has re-generated fears that just as it happened in Pakistan, India's nuclear program is susceptible to being peddled for a price. While Indian intelligence agencies as well as investigators are predictably downplaying the episode, scientists associated with India's nuclear establishments as well as independent observers say that such an occurrence cannot be ruled out.

Another criticism being hurled at the Dubai police is that Akhtar was sent unescorted to India on an Air India flight. "Even third-rate criminals are sent under escort from Dubai. Selling nuclear secrets is serious business," an official said.
