We have a President who exploited the nation’s trust and goodwill after Sept. 11, who claims that God speaks to him personally, and whose bullheaded, rape-and-pillage approach to foreign policy makes Clinton’s infidelities look downright trivial. That’s why the time for politeness and “solidarity” is over. As Bush himself said months ago, “if you’re not with us, you’re against us”—so make your choice already. It’s about time American liberals stopped aping Kerry’s eggshell diplomacy, afraid to admit that patriotic Americans can admire the French, afraid to admit that opposing the war is the best way to support our soldiers, afraid to admit that America is paying for its arrogance with American lives. It’s about time we stopped trying to unite a country that’s fractured by a deep ideological divide. And goddammit, it’s about time we got angry.
