riot now, before u wish u had. riot by yourself if u have to.

* "John Kerry is running such a cautious campaign that George W. Bush can get away with falsely claiming that Kerry would have supported the war even if he had known then what he knows today. This does, of course, raise the awkward question of whether George W. Bush -- had he known then there were no weapons of mass destruction, no nuclear program, no ties to All Qaeda and no imminent threat -- would have gone to war himself." so obvious, but i missed it meself - http://www.workingforchange.com/article.cfm?itemid=17498

* heres another thought - imagine if the EPA/shitehouse lies in the aftermath of 911 actually kill/ed more than the 3000 killed by alq. ive mentioned this a few times "How Our Government Allowed Hundreds of Civilians to Breathe Contaminated Air After 9/11" http://www.sierraclub.com/groundzero/summary.asp
its easy to imagine that we might move the decimal point a couple of slots to 'hundreds' - and there is a very specific, direct link to the culpability of the cadmin suppressing the epa's report

* "Kerry, Bush Vow Help for Veterans, National Guard" http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=topNews&storyID=6011759 and "Bush Vows Push for More Military Benefits" http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=694&ncid=703&e=3&u=/ap/20040819/ap_on_el_pr/bush
why jfk doesnt invoke the stupidity of 43's decision, during the early stages of the invasion, to reduce combat pay is beyond me.

* the cadmin finally gets multilateral: "The United States threatened Wednesday to withhold $120 million from the world's premier AIDS-fighting fund unless other countries paid their share." http://www.freep.com/news/nw/aids19e_20040819.htm

* " U.S. prosecutors acknowledged on Tuesday possible flaws in a key piece of evidence in their case against two leaders of an Albany, New York, mosque accused of supporting terrorism... the error concerns a possible incorrect translation with ominous implications for Aref." again and again and again http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=domesticNews&storyID=6003248

* "A federal judge Wednesday held five journalists in contempt of court for refusing to disclose the names of their confidential sources for reports about a nuclear weapons scientist under government investigation in 1999." http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-contempt19aug19,1,6903478.story?coll=la-home-nation the stoopid/scary thing about this story is not just the setup of Lee, but that it was obviously done to hide losalomos' other, erm, failings.

* "A long-awaited report on the Abu Ghraib prison scandal will implicate about two dozen military intelligence soldiers and civilian contractors in the intimidation and sexual humiliation of Iraq war prisoners" - meanfarkingwhile, ashcroft and rumsfled et al walk the streets http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/iraq/la-fg-prison19aug19,1,3800296.story?coll=la-home-headlines

* "Three billion people, half our world’s population, live on less than $2 a day. By contrast, the five hundred wealthiest people possess greater wealth than the combined incomes of the poorest half of humanity. Poverty and homelessness is not restricted to the third world. The divide between rich and poor Americans sees the richest one percent owning more wealth than the bottom 95%. " http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article6774.htm ftr - i havent become a 'lefty' - i still absolutely believe in (the ideal of) free markets and the invisible hand all that jazz - so long as said mkts are free of the corruption that has come to the fore (to me at least) in the last few years. corruption under the guise of 'freemkts' is little/no different to any tinpot despotism. whether or not its possible to have a corruption-free free-market im not sure - perhaps the founding fathers should have written that 'we hold the existence of inevitable corruption to be self-evident, and therefore any economic organising principle is self-evidently a rouse/farce'

* "Muqtada has given many sermons and interviews in the past 16 months outlining his goals exactly." http://www.juancole.com/2004_08_01_juancole_archive.html#109290118038441426 juan cole is regarded as *the* credible source re iraq.

* another thought re arnie/jeb et al pre-projecting itenaries - i also hear that 43 and laura are headed to crawford to 'rehearse their gopcon speeches' - i also recently heard that 43 is planning 'only' 2 weeks holiday this summer cos krove didnt like the idea of them taking the proposed 4 weeks. i dont bemoan the need for peep to take hols - but given that hes a war president and running for 'the most important election in our time' in 70 days and all that (not to mention that most of his time 'as president' is spent either campaigning or rehearsing speechifying) then u've gotta wonder what the purpose is. of course, he was on hols at 911 (the bookerschool meeting was 'surprisingly' organised as a holiday adjunct just a few days b4 911). woteva - ive been nervous previous summers about bushs summer crawford holidays and all we got were faux terrorism arrests. who knows?

* oreilly is apparently on hols from fauxnews - his replacement, stupid gibson, is replaying the krugman 'showdown' from russerts show - over 2 days. oreilly looks like an idiot no matter how they cut it. apparently faux has such disdain for its audience that oreilly yelling is sufficient. ive previusly said that anyone who deigns to venture onto fnc is complicit - apparently thats also true for anyone who even talks to anyone from fnc - 'irregardless' of the presence of russert (lol) or fncs purported inability to cut krugs mike. im sure its difficult to resist the apparent temptation to state the case, but the reality is that they wont be able to - i understand the dilemma (trap) for them. the 'left' simply doesnt have anyone who can compete - they all end up looking stupid in that format - unfortunately they can never win, and unfortunately thats the key format for most of the audience. i dont know the solution.

* i wish the guardian would stop carrying the AP (im sure they cant, but...) - the hidden issue about media consolidation isnt the media ownership thing per se, but rather the 'wires' " A judge's decision to punish five reporters for refusing to identify their sources for stories about nuclear scientist Wen Ho Lee threatens to chill vital newsgathering at a time of increased government secrecy, advocates say." http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,1280,-4434908,00.html

* just cos its funny: "An Oklahoma judge facing removal over charges that he masturbated and used a device for enhancing erections (a "penis pump" to enhance erections during trials) under his robes during trials said on Wednesday he would retire from the bench" http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=oddlyEnoughNews&storyID=6018557&src=eDialog/GetContent§ion=news

* "Joseph is a refugee from Haiti who is seeking asylum in the United States. He is not a terrorist, and no one has even suggested that he is a threat to anyone. And yet he's been in federal custody for nearly two years." feel safer? http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1092521408631&call_pageid=968332188854&col=968350060724

* "Election-year tactics like making anonymous phone calls or inventing make-believe groups to criticize the opponent now come with a higher price: the possibility of time in jail." ahhh - the penny drops - this is why the badmin has been denouncing 527pacs recently under the guise of the swiftboat noise and cnns 'moveon=swiftboat' thing. $100 sez this law will be used disproportionately. welcome to fascism.

* "One detainee, who collapsed after a beating, was revived by medics so that the abuse could continue" http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/news/news-iraq-abuse-doctors.html?pagewanted=print&position

* " (Reuters) - At least $8.8 billion in Iraqi funds that was given to Iraqi ministries by the former U.S.-led authority there cannot be accounted for, according to a draft U.S. audit set for release soon." http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20040819/pl_nm/iraq_funds_dc_3
