* "The New York Times Ignores the Voting Problems by Professor Mark Crispin Miller" http://www.buzzflash.com/analysis/04/12/ana04029.html
* "A military investigation has concluded that a "friendly fire" incident in which a Navy pilot was shot down and killed by U.S. forces during the spring 2003 invasion of Iraq occurred because operators at two Patriot missile batteries and a command center all mistakenly took his F/A-18 Hornet for an incoming Iraqi missile" - i love friendly fire incidents. they are so joesephheller. especially iff ones. and i love it that we dont hear about them for a year. i wonder how many others will come out. the tillman death seems to have got new legs (unlike tillman, like zarq) - altho we knew abuot tillman a long time ago. we never hear about any iraqi friendlyfire tho. if we ever have a 'good' war, i'll retract my fondness for blue-on-blue - but untill then, the absurdity of them is kinda priceless in a way. a war death is a tragic death of course, whether its somehow 'heroic' or cos of a fukkup, or 'our' side, or the 'other' side or cos of war-caused malnutrition or a car crash or fragging or whatever. and my heart goes out to those who are proximately 'responsible' but given that people are gonna die in a war, i wish they were all blu/blu - cos it strips any pretense of valour from the deaths - all of which are unnecessary. imagine how quickly the ampublic would really turn against the war if all the amdeaths were blublu. "how do u ask the last man to die for a mistake?" would have heightened resonance. in a larger sense, all amdeaths are effectively friendlyfire deaths - ie they are caused by the mistakes on 'our' side - whether its cos some grunt pulled the the trigger, or the stupid jihadmin 'pulling the trigger' to go to war. and increasingly directly, going to war without 'up-armoured' humvees, and all the way down the line. war is fukking stupid. make.it.stop.
