baloney

* the avian flu thing is heating up - its difficult to ascertain how serious it is. it looks like it could be a real real problem. human-human transmission seems to be occuring - which seems to mean that it increasingly gets the chance to mutate.

* btw, the suicidebomb blew up near allawi's office. what seemed conspicuously absent from the media reports is that allawis office is of course in the GreenZone. as ive mentioned b4, i reckon they should subsegment the greenzone - so that they can have a reallygreenzone, which is reallyreallysafe.

* "devastated Aceh Province is "ripe for Jesus!!"" http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/22/international/worldspecial4/22preach.html

* if bush delays the iraqi elections by a week, he wont have so much to worry about wrt sotu - altho the media coverage they can prolly rely on. praps they can do the mirror-image of the 'handover' and just push it back a coupla days. i wonder how much media coverage the iraqelection will get in iraq. no-one knows where to vote yet. thats a secret till - well, till i dont know when. and witht the power out, its not obvious that people there will ever be able to find out. and they cant walk anywhere too far, cos theres no drinking water. and they cant drive anywhere, cos they arent allowed to. and they wont be able to stand online for long if there isnt any water - but the number of voting spots has been reduced by 28% in places. and there are 110 choices on the ballot - so we can do the math and we'll prolly need about an hour behind the curtain per voter. its starting to sound a lot like voting on an ohio campus. cept there hasnt been any stumping. no-one is that stupid. so no-one knows who they can vote for, or where, or even why. and no-one is even concerned abuot fraud - thats the least of their problems.

* ive been hearing numbers like a 60% turnout. surely they are kidding.

* " the White House will announce today plans to request an additional $80 billion to finance the wars... To continue to be able to draw on the better trained reservists, Army officials have said they are considering petitioning Rumsfeld to extend the 24-month limit on the total time a reservist could be called to active duty." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A33540-2005Jan24.html

* the larry summers thing is hysterical.
