* ""If the recount had really mattered in Ohio, we would have had a
train wreck,"said Ned Foley, an Ohio State University law professor
and elections expert." hmmm.

* theres a ban on cars in iraq for the election. how far would u
walk? oh - and there hasnt been any water in baghdad for a week.

WAR
* "Almost half of all women serving in the Royal Air Force have
been sexually harassed in the past 12 months... Victims are
typically harassed by two or more male servicemen of a senior rank"
incredible. freedom bringers. i wonder how many iraqi women have
been sexually assaulted. btw - i love the idiots who are now saying
that we went to war in iraq to help the repressed iraqi women.

* what % of irans missiles do we think are currently pointed at
israel and am & britgrunts in iraq?

* i mentioned earlier cnn's odd burying of this "Two U.S. soldiers
with the 1st Cavalry Division were convicted and sentenced Saturday
in the death of a civilian female interpreter who was shot in the
head in November" which was in para 22 of a story about zark under
'other developments'. nyt did a story on it too - buried somewhere.
it turns out that the woman used to work for wapo - and was now
working for the am-military.
"Two American soldiers were convicted Saturday on court-martial
charges related to the shooting death of a 28-year-old Iraqi woman
who was working with them as an interpreter.
The soldiers, Specialist Charley Hooser and Specialist Rami Dajani,
were both convicted of making a false official statement to
investigators after the killing of the translator, Luma, a mother
of one daughter.
Specialist Hooser was also convicted of involuntary manslaughter,
while Specialist Dajani was convicted of accessory after the fact."
nota bene: 1st par - "charges related to the shooting death". 2nd
par "both convicted of making a false official statement" 3rd par
"also convicted of involuntary manslaughter"
eventually we learn they were just joking around - like u do - and
shot her in the head, thinking the gun was empty. like u do. (one
got 3yrs, one got 18 months). i wonder what she
saw/heard/threatened? fuck the nyt.

* tomfriedman has a swipe at the europeans cos "the Europeans don't
have a Plan B either." which is apparently their fault.

* "'I’m horrified. The people out there – the Iraqis, the media and the troops – risk the most appalling ill health. And the radiation from depleted uranium can travel literally anywhere. It’s going to destroy the lives of thousands of children, all over the world. We all know how far radiation can travel. Radiation from Chernobyl reached Wales and in Britain you sometimes get red dust from the Sahara on your car.’
The speaker is not some alarmist doom-sayer. He is Dr Chris Busby, the British radiation expert, Fellow of the University of Liverpool in the Faculty of Medicine and UK representative on the European Committee on Radiation Risk, talking about the best kept secret of this war: the fact that, by illegally using hundreds of tons of depleted uranium (DU) against Iraq, Britain and America have gravely endangered not only the Iraqis but the whole world. " http://www.caduceus.info/articles/denver.htm

* "Withdrawal from Iraq would be seen by the same lobby as a huge setback and the Sharon government is no doubt pondering scenarios maybe a Tonkin Gulf type incident involving Iran, perhaps an attack on its reactor to ensure withdrawal is postponed."

* btw - the next time one of the sobadmin claims 'everyone thought that saddam had weaponsMD - incl clinton - way back to 91' et al (eg when condi tries it in the senate next week) just cast your mind back to 02 when both condi and powell said 'he has no wmd'

TAUGHT YA
* gonzales categorically states that torture is illegal. well,
torture by certain people, of certain people, in certain locations.
and he is prepared to state that in writing... (and presumably this
is the same issue that boxer attacked condi's dissembling about
last week - despite condi saying everyone was included)
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/19/politics/19gonzales.html?pagewanted=all&position=

* the nyt did a good piece on torture - unfortunately it was
hidden in the Sunday Book Review. it is actually dated jan13 and
ive only just come across it - i guess thats why it was hidden in
the book section... ftr, its scarcely a book review - but it seems
that is the only way it could have snuck into the paper.
news.google returns just 3 hits. (stupid andrew sullivan)
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/13/books/review/books-sullivan.html

* btw - it was nice to see graner get 10 yrs - and nice to see the
other 8 badapples being charged and stuff - i think they were the 8
who were in those 30 pix or whatever that got released. curiously,
we havent heard anything about the punishment of the other grunts
who were in the other 1500 torture pix that were floating around...
