BOLTON STUFF
* "Cheney spoke out for a (bolton) nomination he has aggressively promoted. "I have looked at all of the charges that have been made," he said at a conference of the Republican National Lawyers Association. "I don't think any of them stand up to scrutiny."" LINK
every time the egadmin makes a similar statement, they get themselves into more trouble, and the future ads just write themselves...

* " But, John Bolton's nomination took centre stage on the Sunday shows, this morning, giving Delay a much needed day of rest." LINK

* "The declassified e-mail messages suggest animosity between Mr. Bolton and his staff on the one hand, and intelligence analysts on the other, at levels even greater than have emerged from recent public testimony by Mr. Bolton and others." LINK

* nyt ed: "Mr. Bush is still sticking with Mr. Bolton and Mr. DeLay. But Republican concerns undercut his attempt to paint the criticism of both men as partisan. The fast-emerging question for him and the other Republicans is, when they will realize that nothing in the American system provides for the party that wins an election to do whatever it wants, no matter what objections are raised by the minority party or even some of its own members? The point is not lost on American voters: primal party loyalty is no substitute for effective, democratic government." LINK

* Lawrence S. Eagleburger defends bolton's nomination. boltons highpoint seems to be the "repeal the odious Resolution 3379, which equated Zionism with racism." - i dont know anything about the resolution, but if it was so odious, then blinky himself should have been able to do it.
ftr, heres eagleburger: "As I said then, the resolution "labeled as racist the national aspirations of the one people more victimized by racism than any other."" LINK
which strikes me as some kinda odd logic.

* "There are so many fascinating angles to the John Bolton nomination fiasco, but clearly the most interesting is that both his proponents and opponents believe that the real John Bolton is not the person who gave testimony in Senate Confirmation Hearings the other day." LINK

* "Some Bolton allies -- including Michael Ledeen, Frank Gaffney, David Frum, and Cliff May -- have launched ConfirmBolton.com. I'm thrilled. This is assuring that the profile and background of John Bolton become even more widely known. The more debate the better." LINK

* "If Cheney forces otherwise unwilling Republican Senators to support Bolton, who may have a long record of abuse victims in his past, then Cheney will also be undermining the personal credibility of these Senators." LINK

* "Newsweek reported, in its May 2 edition, that British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw complained about Bolton to then-U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell in November 2003. Citing a "former Bush administration official who was there," Newsweek said Straw told Powell that Bolton -- Powell's undersecretary for arms control and international security -- was making it impossible to reach an agreement on Iran's nuclear program.
Newsweek said British officials "at the highest level" persuaded the White House to keep Bolton off the negotiating team that ultimately convinced Libya to give up its nuclear program. " LINK

* "If the White House, and particularly Dick Cheney, drop Bolton too easily, other zealots counting on total support from the White House will have to recalculate their affections. The White House does not really care much about the U.N. as an institution, but they do care about sending signals to their most loyal followers that the Bush-Cheney machine won't totally stand behind their people.
Cheney made an error over-reaching on Bolton, and if the White House is not careful with this fight and does not figure out a face-saving way to withdraw Bolton, the now fragile support for White House foreign policy initiatives among Republicans on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee may be dramatically broken."
