* the thing about boltons confirmation which i havent seen discussed anywhere is that from what i remember (?) danforth has already left the UN (i mite be wrong). im not sure of the timing, but assuming that bolton eventually gets the sfrc nod (holbrooks confirmation apparently took months) and then has to go to the senate etc etc, then it might be a while till he actually starts his new job. however, if bolton gets rejected, then its gonna be months till they actually install someone else... the interesting thing is that we are only 40 days from june, when the iran attack is purportedly planned (or at a minimum, we can expect the iran issue to be in front of the security council, once the ams sabotage the eu3 discussions) - it'd be kinda fun for all if these things were happening without an am.ambassador. praps im worng and danforth is still there, they presumably have some temporary representation at the UN, but its hardly the ideal circumstances for arguing for another war... (i believe that danforth chose to leave cos he specifically didnt wanna have to sell the egadmins case for war). of course, its not that the ams give a damn about the UNSC - but u'd have to think that they'd at least pretend to try...
* ftr, i hope that the bolton nomination isnt withdrawn, and that it drags on for as long as possible - for the same reason that i hope DeLay doesnt go easily. they are both worth more alive than dead... watching bolton testify again will be a sensation, and there will be significant media (read: public) attention in the next few weeks building up to it. id love to see 5 million americans watching the hearings :-) and bolton probably wont be able to take the quaaludes like the first hearing - he'll have to defend himself. with any luck, blinky's approval will be down to about 40% by then, and then maybe, just maybe, the ampublic will finally start to click that bolton was nom'ed specifically because of his character 'traits', and that bolton's behavior is the M.O. of the entire corrupt crew. and maybe the somnolent public will actually realise that boltons world is merely an illustrative microcosm for why 'we' are in a war that nobody wants anymore.
* btw the beeb is carrying the bolton story 2nd only to newpope-a-palooza
