AP: enemy of the people

as you know - i hate the AP - the good news is that AP spin can point to the truth, or at least the spin, if you backward-engineer the spin. here's the latest example:

"(AP) -- Members of the Sept. 11 commission want to know whether defense intelligence officials knew four of the hijackers were part of an al-Qaida cell but failed to tell law enforcement." (link)
actually, the part they leave out of the lead, obviously, is that part of the real news is that officials knew of the hijackers at all.

"Weldon said that in September 2000 Able Danger recommended that its information on the hijackers be given to the FBI "so they could bring that cell in and take out the terrorists." However, Weldon said Pentagon lawyers rejected the recommendation because they said Atta and the others were in the country legally, so information on them could not be shared with law enforcement."
again, that is patently false - the journo knows it, and in fact explains it 6 paras later, after much muddying.
