* im watching lehrer and they are doing a thing on saddams trial and interviewing john whatsisname from the nyt. they showed the footage of the victim/witness who was talking about human beings in meat grinders and babies being thrown out of the window. i have no doubt that the iraqi regime did horrible things - but the US might have really dug itself into a hole by propagandizing *everything*. it's possible that there are actually limits to what we've seen these past years.
in the same way that the Lincoln Group has completely undermined any legitimate pro-american newspaper, so have hill&knowlton and the inc undermined iraq's 'truth & reconcilliation commission'.
thanks to the 'baby incubator' story, the USG have undermined the healing of iraq, and the rest of the world, and they have, in effect, exonerated previous and future torture. when saddams presumed victims tell a story about babies getting thrown out the window, we are more likely to scoff than be horrified. every dictator who has ever had babies thrown out windows has been given a get-outta-jail-free card by the bushes - nobody will believe the charges.
