* there has been a lot of speculation about what type of spying the nsa is doing - and the implication seems to be that some mix of echelon / TIA / Able Danger are somehow in play. John Mclaughlin is on lehrer and ifill asked him about wiretapping (or something) and JMc replied something like "the vocabulary that has been used is no longer relevant" (the website doesnt have the transcript) - so the entire 'wiretap' premise is maybe misleading, suggesting that the spying is probably more vacuuming than anything else.
OTOH - there has also been a somewhat spooky background rumour that 'the terrorists' may have actually learnt something which was supposed to be double-super-secret about the program. that claim always seemed specious - and JMc seemed to confirm that the only secret that had been divulged was that 'we' spy on 'suspected terrorists' - 'and some of them didnt know that'. im not sure if he just got his talking points all mixed up.
