a quick note about my youngest brother who is here, visiting from Leeds. he isn't really interested in world events or politics unless they are sports related, so i don't expect him to know very much but he said something that illustrates how so many people believe that saddam did 911 and whatnot.
Leeds, you'll remember, is where the 7/7 bombers came from - and there was endless speculation there about evil muslims and explosives-filled kitchen sinks and the like. My brother used to live in an apartment that was literally across the road from where the bombers hung out. The failed bomb 'attacks' were 2 weeks after 7/7 and the murder of the 'dead brazilian' Jean Charles de Menezes was the following day.
In other words, my brother should probably have been reasonably interested and somewhat informed about JCM given that it was 'related' to the attacks, and that the attacks originated in his neighbourhood. As it happens, he was aware of much of the detail of the early reporting - the only problem is that he was completely unaware that this version of facts was completely fabricated.
He was able to recite all the talking points - he 'knew' all about how JCM ran away when they yelled at him, and how he jumped the ticket barrier, and he was wearing a bulky jacket on a warm day and all that. Somehow, none of any of that nonsense got replaced in his brain with any facts.
You can imagine my horror.
And that is why/how many people think that saddam did 911 and that he was osama's lover - and it's also a great example of why the Repugs are so focussed on managing the news cycle - because it fucking matters.
