A former associate of the New York businessman said Kontogiannis thought Cunningham “was going to be a big guy some day – secretary of defense.” The former associate would speak only on background because Kontogiannis remains under investigation.there you go.
Said an FBI official: “Let's look at it this way. Duke Cunningham had power and no money, and Tommy Kontogiannis had money but no power.”
Kontogiannis, described variously as charming and hard-nosed, was born in Greece but became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1976. He is worth about $70 million and owns at least 27 businesses in everything from olive growing to real estate, according to court records. He has holdings in Russia, Greece and Ukraine, as well as the United States.
The congressman and the balding, nattily-clad businessman met about 15 years ago through a mutual acquaintance, Kontogiannis said in an interview with Copley News Service in June.I can add to that - Konto claims that he met Duke on a party, on a boat. The boat was owned by a congressman at the time (i haven't worked out who) - and it was the same boat that Duke later bought, and sold to Konto.
Here's something new: "One of Kontogiannis' nieces also worked in Cunningham's congressional office for several years"
Also: there is "a photo of himself with Cunningham and President Bush"
The article doesnt mention that Konto was otherwise involved with Wilkes and Horizon Sports Technologies.
