fight for the flag

jeralyn:
"The Senate began debate on the flag-burning Amendment yesterday. It's within a vote or two of passing and already has passed in the House. If it passes by a 2/3 vote in the Senate, it must be ratified by 38 states during the next seven years and then will become the 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

The Constitution is not a rough draft. We don't need to amend it, particularly for something that would serve as precedent for lfurther restrictions on our First Amendment rights.
[]
It's not too late to take action and fight for the flag. Tell your Senators to:
  1. Please vote "no" on the Flag Amendment. This amendment violates every principle the flag represents.
  2. The Flag Amendment would, for the first time ever, restrict freedoms granted to us by the Bill of Rights, setting a dangerous precedent that puts all of our liberties at risk.
  3. A free country can stay free only if citizens have the right to voice their opinions. The flag amendment is the first step in curtailing that right."

You've got to be kidding. Within a vote or two of passing?

Please tell me my fellow countrymen aren't this idiotic! We'll be the laughingstock of the world.

Can you imagine prosecutors without time to hunt down terrorists because the courts are loaded with flag burners?

What happens if someone creates a likeness of the American flag- exactly like the flag, but with 25 stars instead of 50. Then technically, it wouldn't be an American flag would it?

My assumption is that the person burning a flag with 25 stars could not be prosecuted successfully. So therefore, a whole industry of creating "not quite the American flag" flags would blossom and bloom. Then Congress would have to go back and debate a new amendment. Then, of course, protestors would burn a likeness of the U.S. Constitution.

Has Mr. Reid considered these issues?

Oh yeah, what happens if someone in Iran burns an American flag? Would the US military be forced to push for his extradition to stand trial?

BTW, I don't recall seeing anyone burn a flag at any of the Iraq War protests.

Shouldn't these lawmakers be drawn and quartered just for wasting public money and time to 'solve' a problem that doesn't exist? [in case you didn't notice, that's a rhetorical question]

As you can tell, this issue ticks me off. America'sFounding Fathers fought against the British so we could form a government that'smoving closer and closer to the government of King George III(if not Chairman Mao)? I think not!

oh no! i couldn't stand any more false-flag operations...

i just heard durbin say: 'we can protect the flag without defiling the constitution'
that's pretty good framing.

miguel - my preference was kinda that they actually passed the amendment, and then the dems could revoke it when they take over both houses - a symbolic way to wipe away some of the damage caused by these miscreants - and have something to remind everyone about the evils brought during these dark times.
