permanent bases in iraq

* billmon on permanent bases in iraq. go read.

* emptywheel: "Poor Wankette. As a New New Journalist, she can't enjoy the parties she attends but she also can't shake the hangover from them."

* emptywheel on Rove & cheney:
This is an outtamyarse speculation, but I think it is possible that those emails revealed the Fall 2003 cover-up, and that Rove at first tried to bully his way through them (all the while recognizing his legal jeopardy increased). The people who were tangentially involved--Card and Scotty--decided to save their skin. And then Rove and Novak, presumably with Bush's blessing, traded real cooperation in exchange for Cheney's head.

I'm not trying to give people undue hope, or trying to cheer people up. But it has become clear that Cheney was the architect of this smear, from start to finish. It has been clear that Fitzgerald has Dick in his sights. If Fitzgerald got closer to being able to prove that case, I think it possible that the Texas mafia might sacrifice the person who caused all this difficulty (and who had become the White House's anvil dragging it down) in order to save its beloved Turdblossom.

This thought is really for emptywheel (just in case she looks in) (and I fully appreciate that I may be getting a little bit ahead of myself here), but you don't suppose just for one second that when Jason's sources reported to him the other day about papers being served, maybe those sources spoofed him just a bit, and that those papers had really been sealed and sent to DC's legal team instead of KR's?

And now Sealed Vs Sealed is actually Sealed Vs Cheney?

Like I say, just a thought!

If Simon Says... It Must be True, right! :) Hopefully! Though I still would like to see Turdblossom going where he'll get "serviced" every day randomly instead of just from certain people formerly on the White House Press Staff! :)

Since watching the Plame Panel vid, I've been paying more attention to FDL and TNH. As soon as I saw that this morning, they were the first sites I checked and have been following all day.

The comments on that post are proving interesting, including a couple on use immunity.

The second comment (confession: that's me) references an article at the Just Cause Law Collective referring to Grand Jury appearances. As noted, para 5 is the interesting one:

However, there are two kinds of immunity [granted in lieu of 5th amendment protection to encourage testimony]. The good kind is called “transactional immunity” and it means that you can’t be prosecuted for the incident(s) you testify about. The bad kind is “use immunity” and it means that the prosecutor can’t use your own testimony against you—but he can use other people’s testimony and evidence against you. So if the prosecutor makes a bunch of people testify, they’ll likely end up providing enough evidence to convict each other. Naturally, grand jury witnesses are almost always given use immunity, not transactional immunity.

So if Luskin and Corallo are both saying it's done, Fitz's office won't comment on either their releases or the investigation, and Scooter's still on for '07, what's going on?

Audie freakin' Murphy?

A little man who stands on a box to make himself look bigger fighting and winning a war practically single-handedly?

lukery,

BTW, Channel 4 (in their wisdom) decided to take the Karl Rove off-the-hook, Dick Cheney next in-the-sights? thread down sometime overnight or early this morning.

According to fatdave there, he posted the same link and that too had been lost sometime the previous afternoon. Now I'm not saying there is a whole lot of censorship going on, or even that this topic is taboo, it could just be a case of an overeager or pro-Republican moderator. But I do seem to lose about 50% of the (similar) threads that I start there. So much for the UK, the 'champion' of freedom of speech.

egads! i saw your '50%' comment earlier (and FD's lost link). I don't know enought about Ch4's website to comment - but it certainly seems odd.

Im-myoooooon-iteeeee, Im-myoooon-iteee, this is the dawning of the age of Immm-myooooon-iteee. I love this idea of "imposed immunity". MMMM, MMMM, good.

I think Dopey took the show on the road because it's not gonna take long for the concept of "imposed immunity" to hit the fan. Soon we'll see the whole cast of characters. (WHIG). My money has always been on Revoltin Bolton
as the Leaker In Chief.

The Wilsons can still skewer Porky Pig in a civil suit. I'm putting my champagne in the fridge and DANCING.

Bolton was involved through Fred Fleitz. Read Henry Waxman's letter to Chris Shays, dated March 1, 2005 in which he mentions this involvement and the likelihood that Bolton mislead the SFRC about having been questioned in connection with a criminal investigation.(Plame). The SFRC found out that Bolton lied to them on his questionaire.

Since he was the first person in the State dept to receive the Niger forgeries and involved through Fleitz in getting the 16 words into the State Dept Memo, he had plenty of motive and has a reputation for acting on his own and retaliating against anyone who disagrees with him. Also, according to David Wurmser and John Hannah's testimony to Fitz, Bolton is who told Cheney that Plame was undercover. Check it out.
