conservatives are saying, 'Enough's enough,'

* wapo:
"For 10 minutes, the talk show host grilled his guests about whether "George Bush's mental weakness is damaging America's credibility at home and abroad." For 10 minutes, the caption across the bottom of the television screen read, "IS BUSH AN 'IDIOT'?"

But the host was no liberal media elitist. It was Joe Scarborough, a former Republican congressman turned MSNBC political pundit. And his answer to the captioned question was hardly "no." While other presidents have been called stupid, Scarborough said: "I think George Bush is in a league by himself. I don't think he has the intellectual depth as these other people."
[]
In a later telephone interview, Scarborough said he aired the segment because he kept hearing even fellow Republicans questioning Bush's capacity and leadership, particularly in Iraq. Like others, he said, he supported the war but now thinks it is time to find a way to get out. "A lot of conservatives are saying, 'Enough's enough,' " he said. Asked about the reaction to his program, he said, "The White House is not happy about it.""

* athenae:
"The real trouble was, it was bullshit from the start. If this truly had been a great cause, Bush would have called for enlistments and conservation, not spending and travel. If this truly had been the transformation of our country, Bush would have called for charity to alleviate the desperation and poverty that makes hatred of America seem like a solution. If Sept. 11 had been the wakeup call that everybody said it was, five years ago, we'd have rededicated ourselves to making this country, truly, the richest and most prosperous and free nation on earth, so that if somebody wanted to hate us for our freedoms, at least we'd deserve it.

If Sept. 11 had been the making of us, we'd be painting schools in Afghanistan, not in Iraq. And Osama would be swinging from a tall tree."

* frank rich (unleashed) :
"While the new Middle East promised by Condi Rice remains a delusion, the death rattle of the domestic political order we've lived with since 9/11 can be found everywhere: in Americans' unhysterical reaction to the terror plot, in politicians' and pundits' hysterical overreaction to Joe Lieberman's defeat in Connecticut, even in the ho-hum box-office reaction to Oliver Stone's "World Trade Center."

Mr. Lamont is but a passing embodiment of a fixed truth: most Americans think the war in Iraq was a mistake and want some plan for a measured withdrawal. That truth would prevail even had Mr. Lamont lost."
Lamont victory was a passing embodiment - but it was fun to get completely sloshed with friends and dream a little. it has been a long long time since there was any hope - and we had some.

Hey!

Lamont's PRIMARY victory was just the warm-up, and don't you fergit it. Come the first of September, it will be time to stop celebrating that win and start training for November.

I plan to do my part by laying in a nice supply of Kathleen's champaign. . . . and stepping up practicing (i.e., training) with a lovely Chardonnay.

The Lamont campaign should've been a wake-up call to the cozy establishment. The Lamont win was a bucket of ice water to those who didn't/wouldn't wake-up...

A bucket of ice, perfect for champaign, wine, beer, what have you...

Looking at a nascent neocon facing down a centre-left challenge in a provincial election next month here in NB. Will be following news early. Might jump in and play... Can't help it; those of you on the American blogging left make it look like too much fun!

LeeB - i wasnt discounting the primary win, or the campaign - just remembering, fondly, blubbering with hope, with friends.

the 'champaign' joke is still funny :-)

don - keep us informed. i'm already covering too much stuff. LeeB and I will get sloshed if you do :-)

Don: What Luke said!

You'll have to give us a bit of an overview of what's cookin' - I'm quite certain the vibes we generate will help win the day. We're now experienced in these matters.

Luke - I knew you weren't discounting anything. It was indeed a very fun day/night/high noon. (And you have no idea how relieved I was to hear that you found the TeeVee.)

Kathleen - it is getting to be impossible for them to hide his idiocy any more. The "naming contest" to give both of them properly "respectful" and descriptive handles rocks on. Heh.
