Question (Guest Question by Noise)

Why is Congress AWOL in terms of oversight? How did that happen?

To illustrate my question, I quote Gore Vidal:

...and I had written about Bush that he's like a kind of crazy kid in a dream, and he thinks he's invulnerable, and he's marching along through a dry forest, and he's lighting matches, dropping them, watching the fires, dropping another one. Link

And Congress watches and applauds. WTF?

Kurt Vonnegut said recently the purpose of life is to fart around. Bush takes this advice to a very serious and vulgar extreme. And Congress would applaud him even if he put all their families in concentration camps, and forced them into crematoriums at gunpoint. You're no less confused about that than anyone else. At times like these I turn to philosophy: some screwed-up stuff doesn't make sense, and stupid is as stupid does. About half the people don't vote, and half who do are a hillbilly feud looking for a place to happen. And most anyone in the other half, chosen at random, would make a great public servant, but isn't enough of a criminal to run. What to do, what to do. An old friend gave me some advice about 15 years ago, and it didn't make sense then: "get a guitar and go on the road." Woody Guthrie would be proud of that tip.

Bush reminds me of so many frat boys I saw in college--and a conversation I overheard between two in particular. One was telling the other about a girl he took to dinner. He kept saying, "I was really diggin' her chili," like she was privileged to have his drunken, obnoxious ass entertain her with a meal. Then he used some class remark like "wanna fuck," and when she refused apparently he slapped her around and raped her. In the course of his college career, and probably life beyond, he no doubt did that to a great many women. Certainly he never had to answer to the law, and for no better reason than his trendy clothes and overbearing attitude suggested he'd be the kind to retaliate. It's that way with Bush. More people need to realize bullies are actually terrible cowards, and will back away with haste at the first suggestion they will personally suffer. Living in fear is a very bad habit. But bad habits are easily broken.

Ever since Wellstone was killed, in the back of my mind is the thought the entire Congress has been threatened in some way or another . . . do as I say or you could be next . . .

We're a single bottle of Absolut Vodka away from total nuclear war and possible annihilation.

Oldschool, you're letting me off waaay too easy!

I'm still here at this office where I can't get at personal email due to IT blocks and black holes to fall into if we try (yuk!), so you'll have to be content to wait for a sensible reply for another couple of hours, it appears . . . but, you are brilliant. It appears Lucyp has execellent taste. That will have to tide you over for now . . . :-)

great commmentary, Uranus. i knew the same kinda dipshits in school. they hated chicks like my friends and i (the losers in black, y'know the freaky beatniks/hippies) cause we weren't impressed by their bullshit. i had to tutor the (get this) captain of the football team to pass English one time...i enjoyed it. he hated it, hated having ME have to teach him. hah! i can still savor the Schadenfreude after all they made us put up w/.

oldschool: ...there is nothing for him to worry about - he's the most care-free guy in the country...

so i imagine nobody's informed him about Den Haag. good. i love when he's surprised. can't wait.

regarding that 'mission from god' shit, methinks he's seen Animal House once too muchly. after the chomping w/his mouth open and the uninvited neck massage et al. ad infinitum, i'm waiting for this:

'YO BLAIR! See if you can guess what I am now. [puts mashed potatoes in his mouth, chews it, hits his cheeks with his fists and spits it out]

'I'm a zit. Get it?'

i mean, we already had You fucked up! You trusted us!

LeeB: Ever since Wellstone was killed, in the back of my mind is the thought the entire Congress has been threatened in some way or another . . . do as I say or you could be next . . .

as i posted in a reply to another thread here (and a lotta other sites) i truly believed they had a weirdass blackmail thing going. then we found out about the NSA wiretaps.

case closed.

Oldschool - Being one of those English types, rather than a cheeseburger how about a nice cup of tea?

thnx for all your comments. it looks like we'll aave a smorgasboard when the revolution comes, canadian beer, tea, and burgers galore. (i'm not sure what Rimone is going to bring).

and the answer to the original question, I'm with RImone and LeeB - there's some serious blackmail going on. Perhaps we'll get one of those massive public video screens for the Revolution parties and show all the blackmail videos... (perhaps not. who wants to see Hastert naked? ewwwww)
