Your thoughts?

don:
"A thought:

While we're all watching Iran & Iraq, the 'other' Axis of Evil(tm) alum seems to have taken centre stage. Looking at a pair of articles (via RS, of course), we find that North Korea has been pushed into a corner and is rattling sabres, while the Secretary of State is trumpeting that the world's behind us. Bolton's been busy, too: the UN Security council has passed a unanimous resolution of condemnation against NK and imposed sanctions. Sound familiar?

Take a new/old adversary, throw in a pinch of payback (for the Korean War, the one Rummy missed), stir in a little old school 'red menace', prepare according to old family recipe, nuke at 50,000,000 for 1/10 of a second, and voila: October Surprise, the war that everyone else'll be happy to fight ("hell, we have the Japs, Germans, Ruskies and Red China on our side this time"), another talking point ("see, we never forgot the whole axis of evil thing") and instant rehabilitation of the image of the US as a world leader (outside the Middle East and inside their twisted minds, anyway).

Your thoughts?"

When the Russians and the Chinese signed the sanctions they specifically ruled out military action. They're not fools, China particularly, knows it will be picking up the pieces on military action - a million or more refugees straight across the border. If anything, I think the US understands only too well that China stands firmly between it and military action in both NK and Iran.

Electionwise, Bush may have to settle for some terrrorism on US soil.

Point to ponder: is it possible that the same incompetents that gave the US Katrina could actually have NO plan other than Diebold for the elections? Have they been reduced to prayer?

Remember machines weren't in the picture in Florida in 2000...

Gilliard addressed that the other day. Suppression through voter ID's, registration challenges, roll scrubbing and general, all-around dirty tricks seems to be the order of the day. The machines will make it easier in some precincts/districts, but they've got more shit to shovel than rigged Diebold/ES&S/Sequoia machine, unfortunately.

Fuckers...

damien - i hope you are correct about Iran. i haven't seen anything in particular this past fortnight to suggest that we are any closer. thnk goodness.

re a domestic event, that is likely to be just as bad (for different reasons - even though the immediate death toll won't be nearly as high)
