2006 was less bad than expected

ok - it 10pm here on NYE

share your 'thank god 2006 is over' stories - and your 'here's what i hope happens in 2007' stories

if i go back 365 days - i'd have to say that 2006 was less bad than expected - for that I'm grateful.

and for the first time in a while, i'm looking forward to some things in the new year - and for that I'm grateful.

how about you?

i share those thoughts with this exception... i believe the u.s. is still in a grave constitutional crisis that, unless confronted, will only worsen over the remaining two years of the cabal's reign... whether it be by impeachment or deus ex machina, my wish for the new year is that the criminals will be removed from the white house and brought to full accountability... (hey...! it's a WISH, right...?)

The U.S. didn't commence hostilities with Iran. As you know, I was really sweating that, and 2006 was greatly improved by its not happening. Yeah, a nuclear exchange would have screwed up the whole year for everybody. Despite Bush's bad news in November, I'm surprised he didn't go ahead. You may have noticed he isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. I'm looking forward to two parties in Congress, and I'm interested in seeing what business citizens will want Congress to conduct.

I expected a new terror strike. I expected a war with Iran. I expected a Republican INCREASE in Congress.

This may not have been the year I wanted, but thank God it was not the year I expected.

HAPPY HEW YEAR to you, Lukery and all your commenters. *love to y'all* xxxxxxxxxxxx

AMEN, y'all.

The intense attention to the pardon of Richard Nixon, due to the 'timely' death of Gerald Ford, must be causing migraines in the White House. I hope the lesson of that pardon is not lost. Even though many are still saying it was wise, some are pointing out that our current mess is directly attributable to letting Nixon off the hook, thereby nullifying the concept that no person is above the law.

My hope for 2007 is that this re-examination of President Ford's action inspires those in a position to do something about it to rethink that entire notion and that we see the removal and prosecution of the bu$hCheney cabal. I have believed for a long time that if the U.S. wants to get on the fast track to restoring its standing in the world, the U.S. needs to make bu$hCo accountable and not just leave it to the rest of the world to arrest them later (perhaps in Paraguay) and haul them off to The Hague.*

I believe our job as citizens is to let our congresscritters know - emphatically and often - that letting these creeps slink off into opulent retirement is not acceptable; that it will just lead to more of the same. Enough, already!

* Oldschool, a question for our GSF lawyer here: Since 43 has refused to sign on to the International Criminal Court and many are using that to insist that U.S. citizens, including bu$hCo, are exempt from its jurisdiction, does that have any binding effect on the rest of the world if they should, say, send a special ops team to snatch these creeps and haul them before that court anyway? (We've been living in a Robert Ludlum novel for years now, so that scenario does not seem too fantastic.) It all strikes me as simply weird that a person committing crimes against humanity could say the equivalent of "neener-neener - you can't touch me 'cuz I ain't playing by your rules" any more than a local burglar could get away with that line of reasoning to escape prosecution. Did we ask any other such world-class mega-criminals if they agreed to jurisdiction before we hauled them to that court in chains? If we did, I don't think I got the memo on that part.

Happy New Year, everybody.

Oh, yeah! Germany!! How could I forget that part.

Marge Cohen, professor at Thomas Jefferson School of Law and president of the National Lawyers Guild, has this to say: "Although Bush has immunized his team from prosecution in the International Criminal Court, they could be tried in any country under the well-established principle of universal jurisdiction."

Pass the popcorn.

P.S. Oldschool, I have decided to follow your sterling example . . . the first glass is hoisted RIGHT NOW!! I wonder how long I'll last!!

Anonymous said...

LOL - That calls for another glass of wine . . . . ;-)

I hope that 2007 is a great year for you Lukery. And to everyone.

lukery said...

prof M - actually, that's not an 'exception' - i agree with you.

Joseph - yep, agreed. twas better than expected. let's hope we can get to dec31 07 and still be able to say the same things (and no, I'm not confident)

lukery said...

LeeB - agreed that the US needs to hold the cabal accountable. and make reparations.

olsdschool: "I only hope that I do not, by my comments, lessen the dignity or importance of what you're doing here."
i can only hope that you're kidding.

cheers to you - may your elbow get a work-out these eve.

perhaps in 2008 we can get some 'don't forget poland' campaign commercials. how much fun would that be?

and cheers to you LeeB - *clink*

lukery said...

D - cheers to you too. May 07 be an improvement.

lukery said...

a minute?

yuo must be cheating! do you know how big the gsf is?

Anonymous said...

Back at'cha, Luke, and Happy New Year to you, too, Damien. 2007 simply MUST be an improvement. Period. No argument allowed.

I still have 2 hours and 43 minutes to go until they fire off the Space Needle, but I'm dutifully swilling wine so that Oldschool doesn't get too far ahead of me. Hope ya'all are enjoying your evening-morning-midafternoon-whatever.

Anonymous said...

Anybody seen Don? You don't suppose he's gone off to some meatspace celebration when he could be here with us, do you?!

Anonymous said...

Luke, all I know about the GSF is what I see (put) on the map . . . are there more???

lukery said...

LeeB - the map is the official GSF - even if oldschool is toasting to each of them, he oughta be legless by now...

(there's also the TeamB - larisa, ew, starroute, ron, sibel and a bunch of )others

lukery said...

don sure as hell better not be out doing the meatspace thing. dammit. how dare he?

speaking of which, where's kax?

lukery said...

os - what are you drinking?

Anonymous said...

TeamB -- we need to send out for some invisible ink. Either that or add a list for 'Undisclosed Location'

Don't know where Kax is, but given she's back in her CA location, I'm betting on family. I trust she will have a good excuse! A few days ago she had a tree limb blow through a window during a brief but energetic storm. She may have caught the edge of the one that eventually dumped more snow on Denver . . . I'm a little fuzzy about which day it was.

Okay . . . back I go to helping Oldschool with the toasting . . . ;-)
. . . hic

Send the nurse to my place at about noon tomorrow.

to put you to bed?

:-)

oldschool - you aren't eastcost time are you? 20 mins to midnight?

i've got a beer now - cheers to oldschool. glug glug

lukery said...

leeb - actually, i've already put TeamB on the map with the invisible ink. if yuo print out the map and rub it with lemon juice, you can see it...

that's not great news abuot Kax's window!

have you moved your fridge next to your 'puter again? (or did yuo forget to move it away from the puter last time?)

lukery said...

wired & weird sounds good. i remember the days we used to drink redbull & vodka - sheesh! absinthe is a bit similar too.

did yuor team win the football?

Anonymous said...

Dang! I knew I was forgetting something. I'm too lazy to move the fridge tonight so I'll fill a carafe instead . . .

The window apparently was sprayed all over her laptop and the room it usually sits in hooked up to the phone line . . . At least the power didn't go out!

Anonymous said...

LEMON JUICE?!! LOL

lukery said...

absinthe is TRIPPY. give it a shot one time. it was banned for years and years.

lukery said...

LeeB - lemon juice?

lukery said...

oldschool - it's kinda sweet being single, huh? of course, there are some downsides....

perhaps a computer chair with wheels can help avoid the unneccessary walking....?

Anonymous said...

Oldschool, you have a point about unnecessary walking. I should have thought of that.

Yes, I do recall you mentioning you are single, from which I get that nobody can tell you to put the danged fridge back where it belongs if you choose to park it next to YOUR computer. Cheers!

Luke, is absinthe that licorice-flavored liqueur that plays various roles on Masterpiece Theater?

lukery said...

btw - you guys playing music?

what have yuo got on?

lukery said...

LeeB - i dont know Masterpiece Theater - but yep - that's it.

details here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absinthe

a bunch of arty-types like picasso and van gogh drove themselves crazy with it.

Anonymous said...

Lemon juice to make the invisible ink on the map appear . . . I haven't thought of that old trick since I was about 11 years old.

lukery said...

oldschool - yeah - i'm totally with yuo on the single thing. it's great.

(although i've never been married)

lukery said...

LeeB - sorry about that lemon juice thing. d'oh.

you shuold try it on the map if you print it out - or perhaps you could just pour it directly onto the psp and see what happens

Anonymous said...

Okay. Mentioning Picasso and Van Gogh reminded me . . .

Masterpiece Theater - a U.S. Public Television program providing nearly exclusively drama/comedy, etc., produced mostly by the BBC - things like I, Claudius, Bleak House, and the like. Do those ring a bell?

Anonymous said...

Actually, if memory serves, the lemon juice IS the invisible ink . . . LOL . . . . Luke, are you sure all you're drinking is beer????

I've got the ol' PBS on the telly right now watching/listening to the Garrison Keillor New Years Eve special Prairie Home Companion 'Radio' program . . .

lukery said...

LeeB - that kinda rings a bell - but i havent seen them...

can you see the Space Needle from your place?

lukery said...

OS - wowsers - an Aussie in there. LW rocks - and i like the cranberries too

i'm listening to some chix too - mazzy star (drool)

lukery said...

LeeB - d'oh - yuo are right again.

what do you pour onto the psp file to show up the lemon juice?

Anonymous said...

Space Needle? Can't see it from here - the needle is behind me and across Lake Washington - about 15 miles away. They will be televising the fireworks starting in about an hour at midnight (when else?).

lukery said...

this is the url if anyone wants it - Oldschool's didnt work

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRHaqMFJetM

lukery said...

LeeB - will you be watching the fireworks?

didja see that pic i put up today of sydney? it's always spectacular

Anonymous said...

Yes, I'll be watching and I did see that picture of Sydney . . . that's what inspired me to toss in Seattle's contribution to the festivities. Sydney is looking very pretty indeed. Do they program the display to music like they do here?

lukery said...

oldschool - dammit - i'm still waiting for it to load...

her name is Dolores O'Riordan

oh to *have* someone that young and passionate :-) that sort of thing would spike some life into all of us.

lukery said...

lee - i'm sure they do all that programming stuff.

sydney harbour is gorgeous all by itself without the lights

in case any of youse wanna come visit...

Anonymous said...

Watching a radio program is hysterical . . . the sound effects guy is going nuts! lol

lukery said...

LeeB - lol - what are you talking about???

which radio show are yuo watching?

lukery said...

oldschool - it's a pretty spine-tingly video

thnx.

lukery said...

can you imagine the rush performing in front of a crowd that big?

Anonymous said...

That's what we should do . . . all trot down under to see Sydney and come see your farmlet thingie . . . get the guest rooms ready! ;-)

Oh - I'm watching Garrison Keillor's New Years Eve special taped (live?) in Nashville. It's way too much country music for me but it's fun watching this stuff that is really for radio, not TV, including fake commercials. Have you ever heard "A Prairie Home Companion" . . . on NPR, I think it is, from Minneapolis - and the fictional Lake Woebegone . . . complete with Norwegian bachelor farmers. Way too funny, and reminds me totally of my family of Norwegians.

lukery said...

10 mins to left-coast new year.

LeeB - do you have some champagne ready?

Anonymous said...

Yup, I'm still here. I'm really delighted to see the end of 2006 - five minutes to go!! OS, you still awake??

Anonymous said...

No champagne . . . too much to drink it all by myself. Shoulda got one o' them little bitty bottles . . . White wine will have to do . . . Cheers and Happy New Year, everybody!!

lukery said...

Lake Woebegone is fictional??? say it aint so!

are you norwegian leeb? ya learn something new every day. although that might explain yuor funny name...

(btw - there's nothing wrong with farmlet bachelors. nothing at all)

lukery said...

happy new year to you leeb.

*clink*

good riddance to 2006, and may 2007 be a teensy bit better. (that's not too much to hope for, right?)

lukery said...

wow - oldschool - that's lots of great information. ya learn something new every day and all that.

in retrospect, are you glad you didnt go to europe?

by the time we see out 2007 (hopefully together) you'll be telling us about how comfortable yuo are in front of juries and judges, and regaling us with some of your wins through the year.

lukery said...

Happy New Years to all of my friends.

you too oldschool. it's been great to have you around this year - and hanging out together on all the milestone evenings.

thnx.

it's a weird bunch here - and an odd friendship - but i treasure it.

LeeB - hows the TV look?

Anonymous said...

Half Norwegian and half English-Irish-Pennsylvania Dutch. Norwegian names are almost as funny as Norwegian food. Ever tried lutefisk? . . . then there's the general loyalty to white food: mashed potatoes or potato cakes, lefsa, the lutefisk, we had to put green peas (in cream sauce) on the plate just so you could find your dinner on the white plate (sitting on the white tablecloth) . . . :-) Nobody ever accused the Norwegians of fine cuisine. Nope. Never!

The fireworks went on for eight minutes, this year with classical music. Every year they do it a little differently. Tomorrow I'll go see if somebody posted it at YouTube.

Weird friendship? Yes, indeedy! I was thinking about that earlier this evening, and how your spot here has contributed to the small world syndrome. If this idea really gets legs, it might pull the rug out from under the war mongers.

lukery said...

i have to duck out for 30 mins.

much love to you - and mary new year.

Anonymous said...

Glad you're still here, Oldschool -
I'm impressed you didn't crash already. :-)

With all you go through before a trial, I must say I hope you don't have cases go to trial every other day! Jeez! That sounds brutal!

lukery said...

did i miss anyhting?

lukery said...

leeb - that's funny about the 'whiteness'

oldschool - can i count on you for representation when they come for me? i'd be honored.

Anonymous said...

I suspect Oldschool finally gave up. An impressive record, I must say, and being intimately familiar with the wee small hours, I'm in a very good position to know.

I picked up most of the party mess while you were out. Now, I think I should probably pack it in as well. See you tomorrow?

lukery said...

thnx for cleaning up LeeB.

didja get the car out of the pool?

till tomorrow my friend.

and happy, peaceful, rewarding 2007 to you.

Anonymous said...

Hey! What's with you and dumping inappropriate things in the pool? Last time it was the TV . . .

I left the car for you . . . didn't want to ruin what's left of my hairdo.

From your keyboard to God's email - 2007 simply MUST be a big improvement, preferably beginning on Tuesday, if not by dinnertime. :-)

G'nite . . .

Anonymous said...

Is that Oldschool's car in the pool??!!

lukery said...

leeb - i have no idea who put the car in the pool. but i can see the pool, and it has a car in it. go figger.

what a crazy bunch y'all are.

oldschool - i know how difficult it can be to resist the urge to go back to 100mph. dare i say it: godspeed.

Anonymous said...

Us, crazy? Oh, well. I suppose so, but never let it be said that we're incapable of inane party talk. ;-)

Here's Seattle's version of dropping the ball in Times Square. The video is about 8 minutes long and includes the classical music soundtrack.

Anonymous said...

Sorry a little late to the party... I've been staying away from the computer last week doing other things...

Oldschool, thanks for getting rid of those Rethuglican congress critters in your state, including Count Chocula, who I personally knew (unfortunately) when I was in high school and worked with doing yardwork when I was a neighbor of his then in Michigan. I'm also thankful that my college town (Iowa City) finally is a blue state area in the House for the first time since I was a freshman in college there back in 1976 now that they got rid of Jim Leach.

I'm less thankful of the outcomes here in San Diego area, but hopefully we'll have some indictments of Bilbray and Duncan Hunter soon to make up for it. Still haven't heard much. I did hear that Bilbray's buying a new house in the San Diego area over the weekend from another friend who's got a professional relationship with one of his future neighbors. I'm guessing they're going to try to keep the grand jury proceedings quiet until he's had a chance to move in so that he can say then "Look I'm living here now!" that he can only say when he's visiting Mom now.

Oh, and I finally got my expired passport renewed. Hopefully without an RFID chip! Tried to get it before they stopped doing the old style passports here. Anyone know where I can scan it to find out? Maybe I can go out and visit some of you all in other places like Canada, etc. now.
