"You know, I, when I speak, like right now, for example, I'm speaking to the American people, of course. And I want them to know that I know how tough it is."
* watch a 2min vid of Joseph Cirincione discussing the india nuke deal. be angry and/or upset. and while you're watching it, remember that this is presumably a counter-point to the pakistan program - the same people who built a nuke program while we watched and said nothing. the same people who sold nukes to iran and north korea and libya while we watched and said nothing.
for some reason I'm reminded of this haunting song by Suzanne Vega
"The Queen & The Soldier"and while we're in Vega territory, My Name is Lukery
The soldier came knocking upon the queen's door
He said, "I am not fighting for you any more"
The queen knew she'd seen his face someplace before
And slowly she let him inside.
He said, "I've watched your palace up here on the hill
And I've wondered who's the woman for whom we all kill
But I am leaving tomorrow and you can do what you will
Only first I am asking you why."
Down in the long narrow hall he was led
Into her rooms with her tapestries red
And she never once took the crown from her head
She asked him there to sit down.
He said, "I see you now, and you are so very young
But I've seen more battles lost than I have battles won
And I've got this intuition, says it's all for your fun
And now will you tell me why?"
The young queen, she fixed him with an arrogant eye
She said, "You won't understand, and you may as well not try"
But her face was a child's, and he thought she would cry
But she closed herself up like a fan.
[]
Out in the distance her order was heard
And the soldier was killed, still waiting for her word
And while the queen went on strangeling in the solitude she preferred
The battle continued on

IMO, the US military isn't staying in Iraq because Bush thinks we can still win (an occupation).
That is not to say he isn't responsible for using his POTUS powers to stay the course. He is 100% responsible in that regard. One peculiar aspect is the apparent willingness of the Bush family to have their (media created) image trashed. It's more than peculiar, it's frightening because it suggests their true intention is more important than whether history books portray them as traitors.
The sticking point (as usual) is the behind the scenes decision making process...who is telling W what to say and why. Big Oil?
I added a word to my vocabulary in the last week or so, and would've taken up (or resumed) serious drinking if I could've afforded it this time of year.
The word is synarchy.
Look it up, its roots, its philosophies (heh!), it's historical contexts and current 'potential'.
Noise: "It's more than peculiar, it's frightening because it suggests their true intention is more important than whether history books portray them as traitors."
