...on the last day of Bush's presidency

* FredBarnes just excitedly said that on the last day of Bush's presidency, he should 'use the military option and take out iran's nuclear plants'

* Henley:
"Someone in the administration must really hate Cambone, though, because they put the “spend more time with his family” line in the resignation statement."

* nyt:
"Two days before he resigned as defense secretary, Donald H. Rumsfeld submitted a classified memo to the White House that acknowledged that the Bush administration’s strategy in Iraq was not working and called for a major course correction.

“In my view it is time for a major adjustment,” wrote Mr. Rumsfeld, who has been a symbol of a dogged stay-the-course policy. “Clearly, what U.S. forces are currently doing in Iraq is not working well enough or fast enough.”
[]
Mr. Rumsfeld’s memo suggests frustration with the pace of turning over responsibility to the Iraqi authorities; in fact, the memo calls for examination of ideas that roughly parallel troop withdrawal proposals presented by some of the White House’s sharpest Democratic critics."

* TimesOnline has a great overview of the p210 story. Larisa's take on it here. (pssst - it's Larisa's birthday on Thursday)

So, apparently, the minute Rumsfeld removed his head from his ass is when Bush decided that Rummy could no longer be a part of his administration.

Well, at least we know that SOME people never change.

luke--

I agree. When I first heard this story, I thought "that's a cya memo, if I've ever heard of one." We know that the weekend before the elections bush was meeting with Gates, so I think Rummy knew he was a goner. So, he had this memo drawn up and leaked to give him cover.
