mr ed
cnn is running the vanunu story - with the lead 'love him or hate him, vanunu is outta jail'

i dont know anything abuot the case apart from the past month or two - but my best guess is that the only people who could hate vanunu are (at most) 6 million israelis. presumably the rest of the world loves vanunu, or at least respects him. as far as i can tell, only israelis could think that a secret israeli nuclear program could be a good idea (the same is true for any country).

therefore the cnn lead is totally misleading - apparently pretending that there is a worldwide dispute about whether he is a hero or villain. again, there mite be such a split, i dont know anything about the story - it just seems odd that many non-israelis would hate vanunu, and defining the debate in terms of love/hate is intended to indicate some sort of equivalence. we see this sort of propagenda all the time - it cleverly defines the scope of the discussion of the issue. 'did melgibsonsthepassion change your life? yes/no' is the same sort of thing

separately, (i think) vanunu has been media gagged for 6 months. which simply doesnt make sense. not only can he not know anything having been isolated for 20 years, but if he did know anything, then the ban of only 6 months doesnt make any sense. presumably they'll try to extend the gag once the media attention has died down, or (more likely) vanunu will be assassinated in the next 6 months.

in fear of being labelled an anti-semite, i wont dare question whether the us response would be different if dimona was in, say, indonesia...
