* "Since the moment just after 9/11 when our President briefly uttered the fatal word "crusade" (and then had to swiftly retract it), it seems as if we've never been heading anywhere else." http://www.tomdispatch.com/index.mhtml?emx=x&pid=1682
* "After riding a Bush bus to the quarry, Walz and the kids got off to go through the metal detectors and have their IDs checked. Bush officials took the kids aside and thoroughly inspected them. When one was discovered to have a Kerry sticker on his wallet, they were ordered back onto the bus." http://www.startribune.com/stories/587/4925396.html
* "Soon after he ordered the invasion of Iraq, Mr. Bush publicly declared that those who mistreated prisoners would be considered war criminals. On March 23, 2003, he was asked for his reaction to the Iraqi capture of U.S. soldiers. "I expect... the POWs ... to be treated humanely. And — just like we're treating the prisoners that we have captured humanely. If not, the people who mistreat the prisoners will be treated as war criminals." http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article6754.htm
* the mcgreevey gay thingy seems to be developing as a mossad/terror thing. http://www.antiwar.com/justin/?articleid=3310
* the teeve coverage of the 70000 troop withdrawal from germany et al is, oddly, focussing on the trouble on german retailers will have - cuckoo clock suppliers and restaurants et al.
* apparently there was a global best-seller non-fiction book called 'forbidden love' demonising muslims for honour killings. http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,10481094%255E2702,00.html turns out that it was a hoax and the story is all bollox. surprisingly, it was a randomhouse (murderck) book.
* speaking of murderck, heres a nice oz headline today "Taxman strips $2.5bn from rich" - actually, the tax office found the munny in (illegal) tax avoidance. how bout dem strippers.
* good news so far re venezuela. the funny thing was to hear chavez being called a dictator in all the recent reports.
* speaking of demonisation, in the previous oz election 3 years ago, our fearless incumbent leader is widely acknowledged to have won becuase he was 'tough on immigration' - just prior to the election, some 'boatpeople' had apparently thrown their children into the water proving how inhuman they were, and therefore not deserving of refugee status "i dont want people like that here" - it turns out that he totally concocted the story (or at least knew it to be false). last week a senior whistleblower announced that he had specifically told howard that the story wasnt true. how odd our leaders' behaviour can be. its almost inconceivable. the whistleblower ffered to, and took, a liedetector test. the pm doesnt believe in, and refused to take part in, such 'gimmicks'.

* the good news about this latest 'childrenoverboard' thingy is that there is speculation that the govt wont call an election in the near term because of the (renewed) reputation damage. (the govt here decides when to hold the election within a band, ending in april) - if we dont see an election here till after the amelection ill be kinda happy. the govt needs to give 34 (37?) days notice - so if we get thru the next 2 weeks without an announcement then we should be all clear. on the other hand, if we still see an election called in the last 2 weeks of october, despite this latest news, then my concerns that howard has promised the election date to the shitehouse will be magnified.
* in other news, our superwhore Foreign Minister Alexander Downer who is apparently 'a well respected/trusted diplomat in the region' curiously pre-empted his current trip to nthkorea by saying 'they could fire a missile from North Korea to Sydney' "Whatever his motives, the comments appeared unnecessary and ill-considered...(and foolhardy)" http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2004/08/17/1092508471405.html - which is plausibly related to recent reports that "North Korea is deploying land- and sea- based ballistic missiles possibly derived from Soviet-era weapons that can carry nuclear warheads, Jane's Defense Weekly reported."

Downer isnt famous for being injudicious so dog knows what his motivations are. the good news is that this doesnt seem to fit in with my concerns about a pre-election attack here - which would make most sense if it could be blamed on alq or zarq - with the obvious link to madrid and the amelection.
