* "Secret Service recently paid Kjar a visit, telling him that his neighbors had alerted them to a potentially threatening bumper sticker on his car. The sticker, which can be found on a number of Web sites, features a black-and-white likeness of Bush, a crown tilted slightly on his head. Under the image are the words "KING GEORGE - OFF WITH HIS HEAD."

* "Bush's Iraq policies may end with draft: The cold hard fact is that the president cannot be for the war and against the draft because the two claims contradict each other. He needs armies to fight wars, and people to make up armies. If no one wants to go to war, they will be forced." http://www.uh.edu/campus/cougar/Todays/Issue/opinion/oped1.html
* chomsky: "Iraq is the main international issue for the US. In Spain, when voters demanded that their troops be removed unless placed under UN authority, they were denounced for "appeasing terrorism." In essence that's been the position of the majority of Americans since shortly after the invasion. The difference is that in Spain people know what popular opinion is, and are able to vote on the issue." http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article6850.htm
* re denouncing the spanish, as u know, i always saw the 'dont appease' thing as the major meta-narrative in the upcoming amelection. unfortunately, the ozelection is in the sweetspot, just 3 and a bit weeks short of the amelection. with all the 'satay the course' noise, and the 'we wont appease' rhetoric - it must be very tempting for them to blow up oz - whether as a pretext for calling off the amelection, or more likely, 3 weeks of 'we cant let the errorists win' ranting will almost certainly mean a 43 win (so goes the conventional wisdom). even if individual voters disagree, collectively, the media mantra will be so deafening that people will assume that 43 'won' cos they'd been told for so long that it will be a very close election, and that 'ams wont bow to alq demands' and all that - even if everyone u know votes for jfk2, you'll just have to take the medias (implied) word that ams are collectively dumb, or scared or something. but the main thing is that the result will be understandable. somehow.
in my 'oct surprise' rant, i speculated that the attack (in the US) might be oct 29 or thereabouts - so that ams are still stunned, and none of the embarrassing revelations/doubts have had a chance to leak out - like the stoopid video-in-the-bin thingy, or the mysterious whitevan, or woteva the hell. a possible prob with an oct9 attack here in oz is that 3 weeks can be a long time if all the i's havent been dotted properly - but then again, 50% of nycers still think that a bunch of ayrabs hijacked dem 911 planes, and thats 3 years later. and the alq-did-it madrid thing still seems to have some traction. of course 50+% is apparently enuff to win an election.
the beauty of an octsurprise in oz is that no-one cept me seems to have considered it, and it would be easy to frame in madrid terms, and its kinda so obscure and distant that no-one would blame bush for the 'octsurp' thingy. if they pulled obl outta a spidey hole the week b4 the amelection even the most trusting might be a bit cynical.
as ive mentioned (repeatedly) - if they plan to call off the amelection based on an ozattack, then the ozattack will need to blow half a city into the sky, but the 'we wont appease' thing doesnt need to be nearly as extreme - although, given the latest 3 episodes in russia, it seems like its gonna take increasingly large events to get attention.
if we start to see renewed amefforts to distinguish between howard and latham then we will see increasing lukery nervousness. in fact, any am-media noise about the oz election will be a concern.
apart from that, all is well.
