war is hard

* hmmm - from what i can gather from the press/blogs, bush lost the debate cos he was a smirking, snarling, irritated, blinking, peevish, petulant idiot. its almost as though people hadnt hitherto realised that he was a smirking, snarling, irritated, blinking, peevish, petulant idiot.

* heres a tip for the next debates - they should atually leave the moderators question on the screen. that would be fun.

* i hate doing the 'what kerry needs to do' thing - but he really needs to prep more. or his team needs to find better lines. " It's one thing to be certain, but you can be certain and be wrong. What I worry about is..." cmon team - this is your key point, and it tears apart his apparent strength, strength. please get it right. how about, frinstance: "It's one thing to be certain, but when you are certain and wrong, then you are certainly wrong. and you'll certainly take the country in the wrong direction (tapping into the polls say this), and we'll certainly end up at the wrong spot, and we'll certainly do many wrong things along the way (abug et al)" - and many other lines need to be similarly honed. i understand their problem - the jihadmin has given them so much material that its hard to know where to even begin when u know u that each element on the list should be sufficient individually, but you've just gotta get the message right.

* and did kerry even mention halliburton? one word, so much anger. where is it? "Harry Truman had a word for war profiteering: "treason.""

* lol - boston globe gave it strongly to kerry - but heres a para: "Kerry even managed to turn around the president's presumed best asset: his determination and spine. "You can be certain but you can also be wrong," Kerry said succinctly." which is kinda funny cos its a misquote, and the original wasnt nearly as succinct: "It's one thing to be certain, but you can be certain and be wrong." nice to see the globe tidying up for the senator and then calling it succinct!

* and this is another one the team needs to tidy up "KERRY: Well, you know, when I talked about the $87 billion, I made a mistake in how I talk about the war. But the president made a mistake in invading Iraq. Which is worse?" - actually its not so bad in text, but the delivery didnt work. its one of the key lines - if he's gonna mention it at all. and please stop ending in open ended sentences like 'which is worse?' - it works much better when u fill in the gaps for the masses. how about simply adding 'HIS mistake has already got 1000 of our kids killed. HIS mistake cost $200bn. HIS mistake was the wrong war at the wrong time with the wrong country.'

* i see now that 43 is actually on the campaign trail saying 'kerry says he made a mistake what he said - but the mistake isnt what he said, its what he did' (re the $87bn). if kerry made the aforementioned 'HIS mistake' connection to the 87bn, then it makes it much harder for 43 to use the 87bn thing. of course the facts about the 87 probably dont matter any more - altho kerry could point out that the president threatened to veto the same bill might be a start - and presumably that would get kerry off the backfoot about the 87 - and even as he knows the reality of what he said, he knows he cant try to explain it. that must suck. but mentioning the veto threat has gotta help.

* maureen dowd did a great job on cnn's intl correspondent.
