bewster jennings, sibel

the other day, i wrote:
"Sibel then (kinda) mentioned that she was quite 'aware' of BrewsterJennings from her time at the FBI (although she used some odd phrasiology, apparently to satisfy the gag-order). This is probably the most significant piece of news (to me).
if we make a bunch of assumptions, we can assume that sibel overheard people at the ATC and the ATA talking about the fact that BJ is involved in counterproliferation of WMD. 2 questions: a) how would these people know that? b) what were they discussing/plotting? (plame wasnt outed till 15 months after sibel left the fbi)"
It turns out some of those assumptions weren't entirely correct.

Scott Horton pointed me to a couple of recent-ish pieces by Christopher Deliso which i had already read, but are worth re-reading.

According to this article, Brewster Jennings AND the FBI were BOTH watching Feith, Perle and Grossman.
"According to her, Grossman was one of three officials – the other two, she says, are Richard Perle and Douglas Feith – who had been watched by both Valerie Plame's Brewster Jennings & Associates CIA team, and by the major FBI investigation of organized crime and governmental corruption on which she herself was working until being terminated in April 2002."
i don't know the legalities of domestic interaction between the cia and the fbi, but my guess is that the operations have to be kept separate. Feith, Perle and Grossman were all under suspicion in 2 separate investigations - corruption and WMD proliferation.

As i mentioned above, sibel "used some odd phrasiology" when describing that she was 'aware' of BJ when she was at the FBI. How did she become aware of BJ? a) were the cia and fbi working together (ie. did Sibel learn this info 'on background')? or 2) did she overhear people in the ATC et al discussing BJ ?

if it's the latter, which appears most likely, then she presumably overheard some people inside the ATC cabal discussing the fact that BJ was spying on Feith, Perle and Grossman (although the Plame frenzy in the OVP didnt take place for at least another 12 months). This probably means that Feith, Perle and Grossman were also aware that they were being spied on by BJ, which means that someone told them. i wonder who that was?

As we know, Plame and Wilson met at the ATC in 1997 (Deliso says she was "on duty" when they met) - so she was working undercover at ATC et al for 5 years. That's a pretty serious investigation. It's also the period leading up to 911 and the anthrax attacks.

Also note the language that Deliso used when he described "the major FBI investigation of organized crime and governmental corruption on which she herself was working" - Sibel wasn't simply listening in on ATC phone calls at random in the hope that she stumbled across something - she was specifically working on a government corruption case involving Feith, Grossman and Perle that had been going on for the best part of 5 years (i think sibel said she went back and translated stuff from 97)

Sibel doesn't talk AIPAC much - i think its because she doesnt have much direct knowledge - but she does strongly suggest that AIPAC is all part of the same entanglement - not surprising given the cast of characters involved - but i've just realised/remembered that the AIPAC-gate investigation has been going on since the other investigations that Sibel mentions - it's possibly the exact same investigation.

Let's hope Larry Franklin et al have been wearing a wire.

1) Great blog. Read your speculations about Grossman a few weeks ago and found my way back via some threads on Democratic Underground.

2) Haven't heard much about people like Colin Powell (if the problem is mainly at the State Department then it would seem likely Powell was part of the problem) and George Tenet (a Clinton holdover) who was accused repeatedly of being "risk averse" by people like Richard Clarke and Michael Scheuer when it came to killing Bin Laden.

Good stuff Lukery! Hmm... Perhaps when everything's said and done, the thing that both Bush and Clinton can be said to have had in common is that they were both impeached for an incident involving a BJ! :)
