zarqawi: fake letters

* canon reminds us of the fake letter from zarqawi to OBL that was fed to Filkins at the nyt. we also know that the letter from Zawahiri (al-Qaeda's number two man) to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was a fake (more here). (are there any others that we can think of?)

I've made this point repeatedly before - now is as good a time as any to repeat it - let's assume, for sake of argument, that the americans faked these two letters, and let's further assume that the letters weren't actually intended to get to their target, but the plan was specifically to 'capture' and publicise the letters.

Question 1: how did the USG think that they could get away with it?

Question 2: where were the denunciations/denials from the purported authors?

As far as I know, 'Zarqawi' never denied being the author of the first letter - despite his many audio releases. And AFAIK, OBL never denounced the letter as a forgery. And AFAIK, Zawahiri never denied sending the letter (although "al-Qaida in Iraq" called the letter a fake - a week after it was released, when serious questions about the authenticity had already been raised).

Are all three of them dead?

Meanwhile:
"Ayman al-Zawahiri released another tape yesterday, which kind of got lost in the furor over Zarqawi's death. Zawahiri was extremely complimentary towards Zarqawi, lauding him as a champion of the jihad and praising him highly. Quite an ostentatious show, by Zawahiri's standards. "

Tripped over a link at TMV to News Dissector. Very interesting stuff. Of relevance to this thread was a cross-section of thought on Zarqawi. An interesting point was noted about a 1/3 of the way down:

WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER VICTIMS?

Najeeb Khan, MD of the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine Department of Orthopedic Surgery raises an important point:

Thank you for your comments regarding the "elimination" of Zarqawi. I find it troubling that nobody has made much of the fact that a woman, a child, and some others were killed along with Zarqawi. Do you?”

Read the whole post. Then check out this one. The rest of the blog makes interesting reading, too.

You mean that impersonal collateral damage? We don't count those. They can't help us get re-elected. They're just bad PR. Callouses, anyone?
