Via Liberal Catnip, an odd AP item on US Mil deaths Two paras:

Outside the Afghan region, the Defense Department reports 56 more members of the U.S. military died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Of those, two are the result of hostile action. The military lists these other locations as: Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba; Djibouti; Eritrea; Jordan; Kenya; Kyrgyzstan; Philippines; Seychelles; Sudan; Tajikistan; Turkey; and Yemen.

There was also one military civilian death and four CIA officer deaths.

No specific numbers, but all "in support of" OEF. From WikiPedia, OEF emcompasses operations in Afghanistan, the Phillipines, and the Horn of Africa (which would seem to include Seychelles). I imagine Kyrgyztan, Tajikstan, Turkey could have been support bases for the Afghan operations, with Yemen the same for the African operations.

So, 61 'accidental' fatalities in 5 years. I'm assuming they mean 'accidental', although one wonders how 'hostile action' is being defined by the DoD, or how many shades in between the two they've defined. And 4 of the dead CIA officers. I wonder if any of those were former Brewster-Jennings employees.

Be interesting to know specifics on dates, places, numbers, & causes, but I'm not holding my breath.

All that said, I find myself agreeing with Catnip: "That's an interesting list of geographic locations."

I love the smell of (Operation) Freedom in the morning.
