our locations on a map

i'm not exactly sure how this will look when it's published - but the delightful LeeB responded to Don's question in the comments here - and plotted some of our locations on a map.

LeeB has kindly offered to update the map as people 'out' themselves.

It looks like we've got many, if not most time-zones covered (there's a gaping hole)

As the earth pulses, apparently you check in at different times of the day. Rimone checks in for breakfast from the UK. Teemu checks in from Finland for breakfast or lunch depending on whether I sleep in. Kathleen apparently likes to check in for desert EDT. And Miguel often checks in pre-dawn before his run.

I'm sure you all have your own rhythms (man, that's a really ugly word in print! I even had to check the spelling) I'm actually a terrible contributor/commenter here at my own place. I should try harder to be more timely in with my responses responsive. When I get up in the morning I have maybe 50 emails and comments and also want to catch up with the news overnight and whatnot - and of course, I'm also working on different stories on background that I'm trying to develop - say, catching up with a Sibel interview - or trying to have an original thought amongst it all - and by the time I've responded to some of the comments, most of you have already moved on to the other ten posts I've written in the meantime. It's for this reason that I recently tried to have a daily 'open dread' post - but that didnt work very well either.

In any case, here's LeeB's "WOT-Is-It-Good-4-Troops" - version one.
(update: as Lee notes in the comments, you can click on the pic so that you can see a bigger version and see the whole thing)

Thanks LeeB!

email me or leave a comment if you want to be added

Rimone is in Bristol, England?? Blimey, we are practically neighbours!! (Well, 24 miles up the road to be exact!)

there you go! you could have the first undigital get-together from Lukery's Land.

I guess we can add you to the map now that you've outed yourself?

Luke,

More than happy to be added to the map! In fact I can go two, one or even half a step closer!! (Half past five at the circus in case anyone wants to ring the doorbell!!!)

Well, we are making serious progress, I see. I like the link over in the right margin. (WotIsItGood4 global strike force = LOL!)

Holler if you see an error anywhere so corrections can be made on the next round.

And speaking of the right margin . . . I'm I losing my marbles, or what?! (on second thought, pro'lly best not answer that . . . ) When I click on the home page, I get the string of postings but no right margin links or graphics. When I click on the comments for a posting, the screen gives up the right margin population -- sometimes beginning at the top of the page, and other times not beginning until the end of the comments. I'm using IE.

LeeB,

Just on a technical note, when you post a piccy onto a blogger site and its widthways size exceeds the size of posting side of the page, then the content of the sidebar drops to the bottom of that page. On another blogger template the max width of an image (in 800 x 600 res) is 452 pixels, but this one may be a little less (haven't tried it but the available posting width is about 5mm less (by my quick check with a rule against the screen)). I guess (but won't promise) that about 432 pixels should go full width of the post side without messing the rest of the page up.

Just whilst I'm at it, in case you wondered why the font size at Lukery Land sometimes changes in the main posts, and then continues to stay the same to the bottom of the page (and also on into the sidebar), it's cos, due to the nature of things here, cut and pasted style code from someone else's coding gets used. Some styles (especially if written in a complicated editor like Word) also carry a set of code for each line instead of for each paragraph or post etc, which makes it painstaking to remove. In the case of increase font, you can inadvertently add a bit of code (or lots of bits), and then you (or Luke) will be missing a bit of code at the end of that particular piece which would be written in order to re-size the font back down again for the rest of the page (and then on into the sidebar too, because the code for that on each page is written into the script subsequently to the actual posting code).

I can tell from you name style above (not having a link) that you don't have (or don't show) a blogger identity. Have a play with a blog theme if you haven't tried it before, even if you don't want your own blog to run, they're easy to get, click on the 'get your own' bit at the very top here, you'll see how it all works. You can always delete the whole thing afterwards if you want to, and you don't even need an e-mail account. Have fun (all assuming I'm not teaching granny etc etc) ;-) !!

thnx simon.

that was my fault.

have been trying to solve the prob - but i think you nailed it.

it seems to work fine in my other browsers - so i didnt notice the prob.

simon: "in case you wondered why the font size at Lukery Land sometimes changes in the main posts, and then continues to stay the same to the bottom of the page (and also on into the sidebar),"

does that happen a lot? do you use IE?

and, yes - trying to move something from Word into Blogger is a nightmare.

incidentally, i do most of my surfing (and therefore copying) in opera, and it doesnt pick up any of the formating. i mostly use Firefox for Blogger (and therefore also pasting) - and for email. If i c/p something from firefox, it carries the formatting across into Blogger.

Simon - Thanks! I'm always interested in learning the insider tricks and pitfalls . . . p'rhaps I can add something to this discussion, too, where Word is involved:

If you want to compose in Word - or acquire something that came from Word, first save it IN WORD as plain text. THEN you can copy and paste into most html formats without running into difficulties. Conversely, when grabbing something from any other format - email, browser, WordPerfect, whatever - and pasting into Word, do NOT simply hit paste or Ctrl+V to do the job. Instead, go to Edit >> Paste Special >> Unformatted Text in the active target document. That way all the codes are left behind and the text assumes the formatting already set up in the target. It is a process that averts corruption and other assorted nightmares.

Now, Simon . . . dear . . . what did you mean by this . . . ?

"all assuming I'm not teaching granny etc etc) ;-) !! "

Hmmmm? Izzat some of that famous Brit humor I'm not quite up on???? :-)

Andrew Simon said...

As if by magic a quick refresh and it was done!!! Actually I'll change this bit - [strikethro] and you don't even need an e-mail account [/can't use this in postings] - If you're sneaky you can use any active e-mail addy even if it isn't yours because you can post as soon as you sign-up, but they (who-ever-it-is) gets a mail with the password and they can then hit the delete button. If you're quick and change the password they can't turn it off but they could complain to blogger. Probably naughty!

Refresh again:

Yep I use IE6. Biggest snag is that the firewall crashes everything if I lose my dial-up connection (yeah I know, I should go bb).

(P.S. I claim the prize for being the first one of us to get his ugly mug up here on WIIG4!!!)

Anonymous said...

We should give you a gold star or some such thing on the map in honor of your groundbreaker status!

Andrew Simon said...

LeeB,

Ta for the tips ;-)

Well, grannie's eyesight is failing just a wee bit now and sometimes she can't quite see who she's talking to! She never was much good on the internet and now forgets if there was something she should have learned in the first place!!!

Refresh again:

Many many thanks for your supreme-est of tributes!!!

lukery said...

LeeB - thnx for the tip. unfortunately, a lot of the time it's actually nice to include the formatting... so i guess the trade off is losing it vs recreating it vs the subsequent presentation problems...

hmmm.

btw - you guys really should dump IE.

Simon - the other alternative to the sneaky one you just outlined is to simply created a temp hotmail account or something...

also - what's this about your mug? i'm confused.

Anonymous said...

Heh . . . reformatting is the story of my life! It's always about trade-offs . . .

lukery said...

a lot of the sibel stuff that i post comes in via Word (or her aol account) - and they both suck - so you can probably time it to perfection - if i'm posting sibel, the formatting will go bonkers.

i'll have to try harder...

Those are the times when you will really appreciate Paste Special. If you are using Word yourself, that is. Even if you have to go back and forth between the original doc you get from her and your new one (or the post) to reinstall embedded hyperlinks, it is a huge timesaver in the end -- plus you get to keep the hair on your head longer. Some consider that worthwhile.

Andrew Simon said...

Luke,

You haven't found me yet then!!

(Actually and to be honest, I ought to dump this whole old worn out 'puter, rather than just its not-so-brill browser!!)

(LeeB, actually the old expression was you can't teach your granny (or grandmother) to suck eggs. Meaning that they (the grannies) always knew about or how to do stuff, whatever it was, long before you ever could.)

;-)

Andrew Simon said...

Luke,

If it's any help:

Anonymous said...

Simon -

That's a good one. Hadn't heard it before but it makes a lot of sense. Kinda in the same family with the "he's forgotten more than you ever knew . . ." reminder to the young ones about respecting their more experienced elders!

lukery said...

simon - yeah - i understand that mug=face - but "I claim the prize for being the first one of us to get his ugly mug up here on WIIG4!!!"

did i post a pic of you? still confused.

leeb - yeah - i think you are right. remember when i had all that trouble with the Dirty Dozen interview? argh!

lukery said...

simon - you might even try opera. it is a lot smaller than IE or Firefox - and is therefore particularly good on an older computer.

i'll email you a copy if you like (i've got the installer for an older version of opera - i'm told that the new versions are actually a lot heavier)

Anonymous said...

Yup. I remember. Too bad I didn't ask you what was happening - probably could have saved you some aggravation. It is just routine in my world.

Andrew Simon said...

Luke,

11.16?

Ta for that but this is just a clunk. New(er) one soon so I'll do it then. Will let you know. Ta again.

lukery said...

simon - hmmm - can't see it.

all of your other posts have the ADS logo - but the 11.16 post has nothing...

lukery said...

ah - i see it now - if i click on your name.

yay.

lukery said...

(btw - rimone thought that the icon that i use was actually me!)

Prize claimed?

Anonymous said...

. . . and not the Dame Edith character? ;-)

lukery said...

claimed prize. the prize being your choice of a) a free Lukery Land teeshirt (if you design and manufacture it) or b) you can publish something at my place. (i think that's all i've got to offer)

lukery said...

LeeB - Dame Edith?

i'm so confused about things today!

Anonymous said...

Dame Edith = photo in flowered shirt with paper hair, silly sunglasses, and the cooking pot for a hat . . .

Andrew Simon said...

Luke,

Claimed then! I'll think of something good to post.

(I didn't get Dame Edith either. Has she been here somewhere before???)

lukery said...

thnx LeeB - i did a quick google for Dame Edith and mostly came up with porn - i wasnt convinced that is what yuo were talking about ;-)

Anonymous said...

Oh, phew! I'm so relieved. Porn would not be my choice! ;-)

Anonymous said...

No wonder y'all didn't know what the heck I was talking about! (I do this from time to time . . . give people new names that begin with the initial of their "real" one . . .

I meant to say . . .

Dame Edna

Celebrity pseudonym for Australian comedian Barry Humphries, who was popular down-under and in England for his female impersonation of a character called Dame Edna Everage who wore flamboyant glasses, jewelry and lavender wigs. Her (or should I say his) interview style was akin to Arsenio Hall (fun & informal). In the fall of 1991, this outrageous female impersonator starred in his own NBC specials entitled "Dame Edna's Hollywood," which featured a number of bawdy conversation with Hollywood celebrities including Burt Reynolds, Mel Gibson, Bea Arthur, Barry Manilow, Cesar Romero, Larry Hagman, Sean Young, Jack Palance and Cher. A January 1993 special "Edna Time" on the Fox network starred Roseanne and Tom Arnold, Luke Perry and Supermodel Kathy Ireland. On the 4/15/2002 episode "Love is All Around" on the legal dramedy ALLY MCBEAL/FOX/1997-2002, Humphries reprised his persona as Dame Edna to play a character named Claire Otoms, a rich (and butt ugly women) who is advised by her lawyers to get a pre-nuptial agreement before she gets married.

The minnit I laid eyes on that photo you posted, Luke, the first thing I thought of was silly Dame Edna . . .

Sorry for the confusion. Next time, I'll hit Google FIRST.

lukery said...

lol - i was going to offer a 'do you mean dame edna?' suggestion - but i thought that might make me look even sillier ;-)

i actually saw 'her' once in sanfrancisco - twas very funny (and im not normally into that stuff)

Anonymous said...

y'know, i saw the map for like one second on friday. when i came back later and yesterday, i couldn't find it at all.

Simon! you're actually physically near to here? bring your family and let's meet up (kids love me for some strange reason)...i hardly know anyone here and there's nobody around whose brains i can pick. *sniff* feel sorry for meeeeeeee, lol.

lukery said...

poor rimone!

at least you've got us... (and simon)

Andrew Simon said...

Hi Rimone - yep - it looks like we can do the very first WIIG4 meet-up then! I'm in Bristol ever second day at the moment cos mum's in hospital (S/mead). Click on my name here somewhere and then drop me a line and we'll fix it up!

(Feeling sorry?? How can I resist!!!)

lukery said...

simon - how are things with your mum?

Andrew Simon said...

Luke,

Thanks for asking, things were not too good up until last Thursday but they've changed her medications and things have improved since then. She still has DVT (x4) and they are extremely worried about the possibility of pulminary embolism. But in herself she is much more cheerful. X fingers!
