911 "theories are absurd and disrespectful"

* via LeeB, MSNBC has an online poll running:
Do you believe any of the conspiracy theories suggesting the U.S. government was somehow involved in 9/11? * 60135 responses

Yes. The government has left many questions unanswered about that day.
57%

No. These theories are absurd and disrespectful -- especially to those who lost their lives on 9/11.
37%

I'm not sure.
5.9%
The poll is leveraging off this wapo story:
"There are few more startling measures of American distrust of leaders than the widespread belief that the Bush administration had a hand in the attacks of Sept. 11 in order to spark an invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq.

A recent Scripps Howard/Ohio University poll of 1,010 Americans found that 36 percent suspect the U.S. government promoted the attacks or intentionally sat on its hands. Sixteen percent believe explosives brought down the towers. Twelve percent believe a cruise missile hit the Pentagon.
[]
Former Reagan aide Barbara Honegger is a senior military affairs journalist at the Naval Postgraduate School in California. She's convinced, based on her freelance research, that a bomb went off about six minutes before an airplane hit the Pentagon -- or didn't hit it, as some believe the case may be. Catherine Austin Fitts served as assistant secretary of housing in the first President Bush's administration and gained a fine reputation as a fraud buster; David Bowman was chief of advanced space programs under presidents Ford and Carter. Fitts and Bowman agree that the "most unbelievable conspiracy" theory is the one retailed by the government.

Then there's Morgan O. Reynolds, appointed by George W. Bush as chief economist at the Labor Department. He left in 2002 and doesn't think much of his former boss; he describes President Bush as a "dysfunctional creep," not to mention a "possible war criminal.""
Near the end it devolves into x-files stuff - but it's amazing that they print this at all.

Indeed, particularly in the tumult of propaganda and intentional misinformation that seems to be flying lately. More interesting, unlike some previously noted stories where 'fringe' elements or 'weidoes' are quoted, to directly reference 'credible' sources, by name, is remarkable.

Is recoil against the administration building?

cheers - yeah - it's freaking amazing - even albright mentioned it the other day in a letter!

i read the early reporting on the HS/OhioU poll and it was the usual trashtalk - now it's on C1 in the WaPo.

the PT911 movie stunt they tried to pull appears to have really backfired. it'll be shown here in 3 hours (i made a mistake yesterday)

Just with the lead para, you have (1) the mention of not just a theory but a motive; and (2) that it's "widespread". Often, we rail at the burial of a pertinant (non-GOP=friendly) point at the bottom of a printed piece, because most readers won't get down that far before moving on.

LeadingA with that para, and in the WaPo, no less, is very interesting indeed.

But, at the risk of looking the proverbial gift horse in the mouth, why now?

why now? maybe their fright (not of terra! but the gov't themselves) has finally woken them up despite the NSA-begun blackmail which i'm sure bu$hCo has on all of them.

don - actually, that's not the lead - but there's not much trash-talk leading up to that.

i;ve been wondering 'why now?' - the other interesting thing in the poll is that people are REALLY angry.

are we there yet?

For years I listened to theories about JFK, and never noticed the Zepruder film shows exactly who killed him. The theories never mentioned it, and it was right there in front of our eyes all along. If you haven't seen this video, you'll find it very surprising. I sure did.

i've been watching path to 9/11 for an hour already. got bored about 20 minutes ago.

anyway about the vid (great use of crystal method music), i have that shit (the zapruder footage) on videotape when the US released it about 12, 13 years ago.

amazing, right? especially amazing that nobody really noticed anything other than where their attention was directed.

they totally made a fool out of William Cooper (wrote 'behold a pale horse' which i still have and have read a number of times); anyway, they labelled him a nut years ago, when he gave lectures about this.

One of the troubling aspects of JFK's assassination was the exercise in intimidating skeptics. I was in the fourth grade, and the very next day our teacher told us many people thought his killing was a coup d'etat. I knew what that was but thought it only happened in poor Latino jungle areas. The way any theory extending beyond the official story was quickly and angrily dismissed by the government clearly demonstrated they were lying. That was later confirmed by the fact certain parts of the Warren report were put under seal for more than 70 years.

George Bush, Sr. was a big dog at the CIA in those days, and rumor has it he and Jr. had their hands in JFK, Jr.'s death, not just because he presented an unbeatable opponent as a presidential candidate in 2000, but that because, if elected, he would insist on unsealing the Warren report. Thus you had the beginning of the neocon movement and the birth of the conservative New World Order.

*mirthless laughter* dunno if it exactly happened then but it sure did w/the SCOTUS thing (may they all go to the hells of their own belief systems).

Yeah, everybody's mouth is still shut about JFK. The mafia hated him, he wanted to leave Vietnam so the military hated him and he wanted to shut down the CIA, so they hated him too. We've had a number of coups. The one with Bush definitely is. I just remembered, after the teacher mentioned the C word, there was some very private talk about terminating anyone who said that to their classes, and federal authorities expressed an interest in knowing about people who made such claims, but I never heard about retribution on those who did. I figure the blood's on Bush, Sr.'s able hands and that his hold on people in high places is based on fear.
