wingnutdaily: GOP unworthy of governing

* amy:
"Calls Increase for Hastert to Resign Over Foley Scandal"
* amy:
"Meanwhile Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has warned federal judges not to question the president’s judgments in the war on terror. In a speech at Georgetown University, Gonzales said the Constitution provides the courts with few tools to overturn military and foreign policy decisions, especially during wartime. He urged judges to retain "a proper sense of judicial humility."
* amy:
"In news from Lebanon – the United Nations has announced that Israel refused to cooperate with an investigation into the Israeli air strike that killed four UN observers in southern Lebanon in July. Israel did not allow UN investigators to interview military commanders involved in the incident. The UN was trying to determine why Israel continued to bomb the UN site even after UN workers made repeated calls for the attacks to stop. Meanwhile -- the United Nations is disputing Israel’s claim that it has completely withdrawn from southern Lebanon. UN officials say Israel is still occupying the border village of Ghajar."

* billmon:
"Political change -- much less fundamental change, the kind that frees the slaves or humbles malefactors of great wealth -- may no longer be possible in American politics.

The Republicans may lose this election. They're certainly trying hard. They may even lose the next one. But it's going to take more than one or two scandal-boosted victories to persuade me the Dems have a future that doesn't involve being the ornamental decoration on a functionally one-party state.

But of course, if the Dems lose next month, despite the GOP's best efforts to hand them the House and quite possibly the Senate, then I guess we'll know that's where they're going. And unlike the Whigs, I don't think they'll be coming back."

* amy goodman had bill moyers on for an hour to discuss his new abramoff show. it looks devastating. dont miss it.

* paradox at TLC:
"I’m as flabbergasted and incredulous as I have ever been—what in name of holy Jesus, Mary & Joseph is going on here? How is it possible for 9/11 commission members not to know of this meeting after Tenet testimony, or to lie so easily in the last few days? Just what the fuck else was so “secret” about 9/11 that they’d leave something so critical deliberately out!?

How is it possible these scumbags, these lowest form of life sonzabitches asshole maggots, how could they ever think of lying to the American public about 9/11? Didn’t they possess any idea of the rage and fury such behavior would provoke among every American?

If you own a copy of 9/11 Commission Report use it to start fires, that’s all it’s good for. I still can hardly believe I have written the above words, but I have.

How dare they. How dare they do this to Americans and our country."
* wingnutdaily:
"GOP unworthy of governing

This column is going to make me very unpopular with Republicans.

I don't care. It must be said.

Following the revelations about Florida Rep. Mark Foley's sexually suggestive e-mails to a 16-year-old congressional page, I have concluded Republicans are unworthy of retaining control of the federal government.

I sincerely regret this is the case.

I would much prefer that there were a real viable alternative to the Democrats, who are not only unworthy, but also unacceptable.

But wishful thinking is not going to protect our country. Wishful thinking is not going to expand freedom, promote justice and restore morality to America.

It's time to recognize the two-party system is just flat broken.

The Foley case is a great illustration.
[]
Hastert's aides referred the matter to the clerk of the House, and "mindful of the sensitivity of the parent's wishes to protect their child's privacy and believing that they had promptly reported what they knew to the proper authorities," they did not discuss it with others in Hastert's office – including, apparently, their boss.

That's a disgrace. Hastert is a disgrace for setting this kind of tone in his own office. There was obviously a circle-the-wagons mentality at work there.
[]
Republicans will pay a price for this error. And they should.

* there's a new article in the California Courier about SIbel & Madsen.

Miguel's point about the previous leak keeps coming up:

Grossman leaked Brewster Jennings to an ISI agent and a Northrop Grumman official (associated with the ATC) in 2001.

So it seems any intel work Plame was doing for Brewser Jennings after '01 (could have been earlier...who knows) would most likely have been compromised if it involved the ATC.

So why the Fitzgerald saga?
