Hurricane Subpoena bearing down on Capitol Hill

* roll call via tpmm:
"With Hurricane Subpoena bearing down on Capitol Hill, veteran GOP spin masters Mark Corallo and Barbara Comstock are hitching their wagons to help Republicans fight the storm and — well, sure — rake in some dough.

Corallo and Comstock are forming the crisis management firm Corallo Comstock, Inc. They aim to open shop on Jan. 1, just before the new Democratic chairmen will start banging their gavels and demanding information from the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue.

“Just in time for subpoena season,” Corallo told HOH."
hysterical.

* Dr Elsewhere at Cannon's place finally(!) has her interview with Liz DeLaVega about her new book. read it. here's a snippet :
EDLV: The law is very clear on this point: It's not up to the public to track down all the falsehoods. There is no caveat emptor when it comes to what public servants say and present to the public. It's the responsibility of those in office, who've taken that oath, to do due diligence. This is different from those things that government officials genuinely cannot tell the public for national security reasons or such. But that differs significantly from deliberately misleading the public and telling flat out lies, where it becomes a crime. The whole thing, not just the lies, but the various other types of deceit that work together to make up the fraud. Most people are smart enough to know they can't just flat out lie and get away with it, so they carefully craft those half-truths and misrepresentations that leave out the important - but unhelpful for them - information. For instance, Bush's statement in his SOTU address in January of 2003, those sixteen words claiming that Britain had information about Iraq seeking uranium from Africa. It's a technically accurate statement; Britain had received such information, but Bush was fully on notice regarding the many misgivings expressed by experts in the field about the quality of that information. He was again not sharing all the details necessary for the Congress and the American people to make an informed decision."

* wapo A1:
"Opium production in Afghanistan, which provides more than 90 percent of the world's heroin, broke all records in 2006, reaching a historic high despite ongoing U.S.-sponsored eradication efforts, the Bush administration reported yesterday.

In addition to a 26 percent production increase over past year -- for a total of 5,644 metric tons -- the amount of land under cultivation in opium poppies grew by 61 percent. "
there's no mention of Turkey in the article

* clemons has a plan to save us all from the evil iranian regime:

There was something on Afghanistan, drugs, and the Pentagon here. There's an indirect Turkish connection in the form of Eric Edelman, mentioned toward the end of the article. It's indirect, but it does indicate that Rumsfeld had a former US ambassador to Turkey involved with answering the questions of congressmen about Afghan drug-trafficking.

I wonder how much NATO is involved with that?

Mizgin,
I think NATO gets 10% of the cut. The Brits have a long history of turning a blind eye to the Heroin trade. I wonder if Blair is getting HIS fair share of all the gratuities.

thnx mizgin.

Edelman actually now has Doug Feith's job - sibel has pointed to him as a 'player' in this nefariousness, as did Giraldi.

Miguel, as far as I know, the Brits didn't get worked up about the Turkish heroin trade until the Baybasin gang started firing people up in London. The UK is Turkey's biggest supporter for EU accession, too. It must be good for business.

Luke, about Edelman in Feith's job, do you mean Undersecretary of Defense for Policy? If so, I'm wondering if there are any known connections between Edelman and Ledeen. Ledeen seems to have a habit of going behind backs to do P2-style intelligence networking for the Defense Department.

Sabre-rattling over Iran seems to have reached fever-pitch among the extreme right-wing fascist crowd, with Ledeen being a main instigator. I despise the mullahs but have no faith in the Americans when it comes to Iran. As Serok Apo said back in September, we have entered a very dangerous time.
