Robert Fisk: Flase flag ops in Iraq

* demnow had two segments (one, two) of a speech by Robert Fisk - i recommend you listen to both - but I wanted to highlight this:
So let’s take a look at some really ferocious terror, collected on the streets of Baghdad and from the front doors of those who are indeed facing a generation of threats, many of them scrupulously collected, these documents, by local UN officials, given to some of my Italian colleagues, who handed them to me. And this is the first time they’ve been detailed in this country. They are printed, not hand-written, and they are poisonous.
“To the ignoble rejectionists who sold their religion and community for worldly rewards,” begins one note from a Sunni group about their Shiite Muslim countrymen, “it is clear that you must be classified among those who have betrayed the covenant of Allah and his prophet and are intellectually and actively involved in fighting against the Mujahideen. Therefore, we grant you 24 hours to vacate this righteous district. Otherwise, punishment and retribution shall be your fate. Allah is greater. Praise and grace be to Allah.”
There are dozens and dozens of these documents, and they’re not put there by people who are joking. Some of them, I suspect, may not be put there by groups at all, because I have a suspicion that there are people who want a civil war in Iraq, and they are not necessarily Iraqi. There are many of these documents which I suspect were not written by Iraqis. They’re very neatly printed, some of them.
He's arguing that much of the shenanigans in iraq are false flag ops.

I thought there was a lot of evidence, not just a suggestion, that the U.S. organizes such "false flag" efforts. So here,

"...Then, faced with a losing war against Salvadoran rebels, the U.S. government funded or supported "nationalist" forces that allegedly included so-called death squads directed to hunt down and kill rebel leaders and sympathizers. Eventually the insurgency was quelled, and many U.S. conservatives consider the policy to have been a success—despite the deaths of innocent civilians and the subsequent Iran-Contra arms-for-hostages scandal."

I remember hearing about cases where Iraqis were asked to step away from their cars so that U.S. agents could load them up with explosives, and then told to drive to some checkpoint further up the road.

In fact, I imagine the use of death squads and such tactics would be common to divide the enemy. I remember that the use of such tactics has been considered for some time. So,

"...Code named Operation Northwoods, the plans reportedly included the possible assassination of Cuban émigrés, sinking boats of Cuban refugees on the high seas, hijacking planes, blowing up a U.S. ship, and even orchestrating violent terrorism in U.S. cities. The plans were developed as ways to trick the American public and the international community into supporting a war to oust Cuba’s then new leader, communist Fidel Castro. America’s top military brass even contemplated causing U.S. military casualties, writing: “We could blow up a U.S. ship in Guantanamo Bay and blame Cuba,” and, “casualty lists in U.S. newspapers would cause a helpful wave of national indignation.” "

Isn't the issue here, is there nothing we won't do to get our way? Or, is there nothing the people in charge won't do to get their way?

thanks steven

"In fact, I imagine the use of death squads and such tactics would be common to divide the enemy. "

i think that Fisk's opinion here is that 'someone' (i think he's talking abuot the israelis) have actually been using false flag ops not to 'divide the enemy' in this particular war - but to actually CREATE the war - i.e. his position is that the 'enemy' being 'divided' is actually 'iraq' - and that the israelis have actually been using false flag ops from the beginning to foment a civil/sectarian war.

mission accomplished.

When our leading propaganda organs in this country like GE-owned NBC, the NYT, and WP agree what there is a civil war in Iraq, the safe assumption is that the "civil war" is being deliberately provoked by our own forces in false flag operations. We already caught red-handed a British unit enaged in it, and then they had to forcibly break their comrade out of an Iraqi prison to save their crooked little necks.

That was really excellent talk by Fisk on Democracy Now. I urge everyone to read it and save it for posterity.

ewastud - i'm not sure i agree with this element: "the safe assumption is that the "civil war" is being deliberately provoked by our own forces in false flag operations."

it's taken them three years to sign on to this nomenclature - but i generally agree with yuor comments.

If you actually believe that the military men and women would do these things, then perhaps you should move to another location. We are taken from the general public, for various reasons, and we put our lives at risk for the rights we have. To accuse us of such this is morally dispicable, as well as being incredibly naive, considering you are not exposed to anything remotely similar to what we go through day after day in the middle east. When you are qualified to judge the troops (have been one), then feel free to post what you like. Until then, your simply making statements about people that you don't really understand. I hope you at least consider this before dismissing it.
